OWOBB #56: A Big Year in Blood Bowl
2024 feels like it's been a BIG year for Blood Bowl. Indeed someone (me) labelled it a Blood Bowl Golden Age!
So One World, One Blood Bowl's Festive Season Episode will try to review and discuss the state of Blood Bowl across all formats, with three people that have themselves had big 2024's.

Live at 9pm UK on Sunday 22nd on https://www.twitch.tv/purplechest and then after on Twitch Highlight, YouTube and all good podcasting sites I will be joined by three coaches at the very top of their Bb games and chat about Gnomes, Chorfs, Eurobowls, BB3, the BB3 'World Cup', FUMBBL, BB 2025 and probably the state of gift dice as well. There might even be the odd silly festive hat.

Your Panel:
PurpleChest: Always successful, in his own head.
Olivier DuLac: Top NAF coach, won a eurobowl,
Strider84: Swiss master, FUMBBLer and BB3 Cup Winner.
Drakenspear: Won the Chaos Cup

So a global panel, to look at the global picture, and find global answers.
We'd love to see you there live, but any points or questions left here will also be included.
And a joyful and merry winterval to all.

Nuffle League: Season 2 Recruiting!

I am proud to present Season 2 of the most Chaotic League on Fumbbl... and honestly anywhere for Blood Bowl.

What is the Nuffle league you ask? Well it is different from anything you have ever played before on this site. Think of it as a Roguelike version of Bloodbowl. You are given a starting team of 11 players that are completely random from a list of 992 different positionals. To get another player, you get to roll 3 of those players, and you get to choose one. It allows for unique combinations and strategies that ensure that no two games will ever be the same.

We will be using the 2016 skill rolls, and the 2020 ruleset for the games played. Due to how chaotic the league is, the Starting Teamvalue for all coaches (new and returning) is 1690k. Without stacks of linemen, it is easy to hit this number quite easily.

The ensure the balance of the league, we are lowered the number of bombers and big guys on the list. The average player may get a big guy about once every 4 rolls, and a bomber like rolling a natural 20 on a d20.

The Nuffle League features every single player currently on any roster on Fumbbl. This includes the regular teams, the secondary teams (Brettonia, Simyin, and Slann), the Stunty Teams, the Secret League Teams, CIBBL Modified Players - including their very own Carnival of Chaos, Relic Slann, and Blood Naga teams, along with some other more obscure teams with a ton of flavor, fluff, and fancy icons. In the past, we have had 616 players, but now, there are currently 992 different positionals that could end up on your team!

If you are interested, please let me know and we will have Nuffle work their magic and get you a team all set up and ready to go. It does test your knowledge of the game as you will see everything, and probably some things you have never seen before.

We have players from both the US and European Time Zones. We are playing bi-weekly, 14 day roll overs. Come one and come all, to the most chaotic games you will ever play on this site!

XpherAndTheAxes: It's like ForemoleTrashMouse is handing out Shrooms and random Figurines and telling us to play Blood Bowl

The Demon: There isn't a league like it. I play in a lot of leagues, and every league is different. Its uniqueness makes it amazing! Bow down to Foremole TrashMouse!

Carlo Pellegattti (Luca): The league concept is so cool it's weird it was not a thing before you came!

Wintergreen13: So excited to get my Nuffle League team going again! Love this league!

Here is our Discord which is what we use for our primary mode of communication: https://discord.gg/uQfjnkK5Uh

There is just one last question... Will Nuffle favor you?

Green Dukes Drop to 1-2 on Season With 2-1 Loss to Universidad Azteca

Green Dukes Drop to 1-2 on Season With 2-1 Loss to Universidad Azteca

The Duqueswood University Green Dukes dropped their second game of NCBB season 46 in a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Universidad Azteca. The Azteca amazon squad got touchdowns from piranha warrior blitzer Dia “Swift” Seafoam and python warrior thrower Danica Patrick. Junior wardancer Dethwyntyr Whitebranch (elven military science—RETC) put the Green Dukes on the board with their lone touchdown, and freshman treeman Mirlin Weatherborn (tree-bark studies) contributed 1 casualty, his third of the season, despite rooting twice in the game.

“It’s great to see Mirlin putting some bite in his bark,” said Green Dukes’ Coach Gerric Smithson. “Now if we can just get him to move a bit, we’ll be onto something.”

Seafoam opened the scoring on a long touchdown run after controlling the opening kick near midfield. The Green Dukes set up a conventional elf-screen defense to slow the drive but gave up the edge on the southern sideline midway through the half in an attempt to gang-foul senior jaguar warrior blocker Albucilla Gondel.

“Look, when a weapon like that who’s only wearing bikini armor is on the ground, you stomp on her,” said Coach Smithson of his questionable decision to pull five elves away from the ball carrier to foul Gondel. “That’s just basic blood bowl.”

Duqueswood’s historically lackluster fouling game continued to disappoint, however, as back-to-back fouls on Gondel failed to do anything more than keep the amazon happily on the ground for a minute or two basking in what she took to be a back-walking massage. The problem seems to be the elves’ refusal to wear any metal substance on their bodies.

“Yeah, that whole ‘basic blood bowl’ thing … I kind of forgot that doesn’t really apply when your players refuse to wear boots made out of anything but leaves and branches,” said Coach Smithson during his postgame interview. “Maybe I could have them wrap their feet in briar branches next game. Who knows? We’ll keep working at it.”

With the sideline unprotected, as the bulk of the Duqueswood team released the tension from Gondel’s lumbar region, Seafoam scored easily to put Azteca up 1-0.

A minute still remained in the half, so Duqueswood went into a hurry-up offense to try to even the score. Thanks to some key blocking on the line of scrimmage by Weatherborn, Whitebranch was able to take the hand-off from junior wardancer Curswyn Redgrass (independent study: vengeance) and break deep into Azteca territory with seconds still left on the clock. His blockers then held off a swarm of amazons, and Whitebranch escaped toward the northern sideline, sprinted to the end zone, and dove across the goal line just as time expired.

“Watching Dethwyntyr move so swiftly is bittersweet,” said Weatherborn after the game. “I am glad for my teammate, and happy that my block helped him, but I also remember what it was like to be a wardancer, that feeling of the wind in my leaves—I mean hair—and I … Let’s just say, if my tears could but satisfy my thirst, I would never take root again.”

With the game tied 1-1 and the Green Dukes receiving the second-half kick, Duqueswood seemed poised for a victory, but they were quickly done in by sloppy blocking and bad positioning. Sophomore thrower Phaedry Featherwind (plant psychology) grabbed the kick and settled in deep in her own territory as the rest of the team tried to take control of the line of scrimmage. When sophomore line-elf Grindar Redbranch (modern fae poetry) failed to make a key block on freshman linewoman Claudia Scrole and instead fell to the ground after taking an elbow to the throat, the plan quickly fell apart.

“She looked like a lass who could appreciate free verse,” explained Redbranch between bouts of coughing up blood after the game. “So I thought perhaps rather than attacking her, I could distract her by reciting her some lines from ‘The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufairy’: ‘I have measured out my life in dandelion seeds …’ I guess she was not a fan. Maybe I should have gone with Dylan Thornmas instead.”

The miscue allowed the amazons to quickly close in on Featherwind and overwhelm the Green Duke blockers. In a last gasp attempt to salvage the drive, Featherwind tried to dodge away from two amazons to make a desperation pass to Redgrass in Azteca territory. Junior blitzer Asa Meets, however, was able to sweep out the thrower’s legs sending Featherwind and the ball to the pitch. Patrick then easily scooped the ball off the grass and scored to give Azteca the 2-1 victory.

“I’ve got to find a way to put my players in better position,” said Smithson on his failure to make something of his team’s key second possession. “Sometimes I think the best position for them might be off the field altogether and up a tree, but … yeah, we’ll get this figured out.”

Meanwhile, controversy may be brewing once again for the Green Dukes, according to recent reports. Weatherborn’s former parents, Mirvis and Scyntia Spinleaf, apparently have officially contested his standing with the team, claiming the elf-turned-treeman exhausted his eligibility before dying as an wardancer.

“They are making a mockery of our son, soiling his legacy, and besmirching his memory,” said Scyntia in a statement issued through her elftourney, former Duqueswood VP of Student Safety Baerys Pondripple. “To force me to watch my fleet-footed, graceful son out there now as this abomination, rooting into the ground, failing to move a single yard on the field for an entire game—this is an insult to the Spinleaf family.”

“Last time I checked, the kid changed his name to Weatherborn,” said Smithson when asked about the controversy. “If you want to know how his family feels about that, you should probably ask Oakward—just be prepared for his answer to take a few hours,”

The Turn Before Blitzmas (A Visit From Lord Nuffle)

’Twas the turn before Blitzmas, when all across the pitch
Not an injury was bleeding; every wound had been stitched.
My blitzers stood for the kick, shaking fists hard as rocks

In hopes that Lord Nuffle would soon bless their blocks.
My linemen all braced, their helmets in shreds
From the steel-spiked boots that had danced on their heads;
And I, their proud coach, glad to still be alive,
Had just settled my brain on a game-winning drive.
But then from the stands I was hit with a splatter,
So I turned from the bench to see what was the matter.
Blood sprayed out in a spurt from an unlucky fan’s head,
As behind him emerged a shadow of dread.
All those near the shadow soon parted and ran,
And I sensed what was coming was not a mere man.
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a dark robed figure who chilled me with fear.

He stalked toward the field with a death-like cold shuffle,
And I knew in a moment he must be Lord Nuffle.
More rapid than skaven his curses flew out,
As he whistled and laughed, and said with a shout:
“Now, dice! Now ye roll and land on a ten!”
And like that, my opponent had a blitz, yet again.
Past the line of scrimmage, through my blockers inept,
Dashed his brutes through my backfield, as I cursed and I wept.
With a punch to the chin, they knocked my runner to the ground
And waited with glee for the kick to come down.
I had no hope, alas, no new plan to hatch,
So I begged dear Lord Nuffle that they’d fail the catch.
Then lo, in a twinkling, the ball bounced off their hands,
And I realized with fool’s hope, I still had a chance.
A six-plus pick-up, a dodge, and a mere quick pass
Then a hand off to a lineman facing just open grass ...
From there, the endzone was only two turns away,
If those rolls and two GFIs went my way.
So I turned to Lord Nuffle and tore at my hair.
Then dropped to my knees and offered this prayer:
“Just give me these dice, and I swear to you then
I’ll never ever ask for a reroll again.”

Nuffle’s droll little snear curled like a blade,
As he listened closely to every promise I made.
He had a dark, deathly face and a gut wide as two hulls
That shook when he laughed, like a sack full of skulls.
He was filthy and foul, a right angry old god,
But then he did something that seemed thoroughly odd.
With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,
He gave me to know that my plan was not dead.
I rolled once, I rolled twice, then a third time as well.
A six, six, and a six, my opponent cried, “bloody hell!”

Then my lineman at the goal line rolled his last GFIs,
And the glory of more sixes struck my tear-filled eyes.
’Twas a turn-16 touchdown, a glorious win,
And I turned then to thank my brand new best friend.
But Nuffle had gone with a scrape and a thud,
Dashing off through the crowd in a splatter of blood.
Still, I heard him exclaim, with that voice cold as ice—
“Happy Blood Bowl to all, and to all some good dice!”

---

(I'm sure this kind of thing has probably been done before and likely better, but I did this for a roster for a team I brought to the Back Broke Mountain Bowl in Virginia this weekend, so I figured I'd share, since 'tis the season. If you want to print off a copy so you can gather the family around the fire for a Blitzmas Eve reading, here's a link to download the PDF of the roster.)

Is Blood Bowl breaking you? - You are not alone.

'Blood bowl breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very skillful and the very logical and the highrollers. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry'

Ernest Hemmingway shortly after being diced by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Celebrity Authors Blood bowl tournament, Havannah 1936. Hemmingway later described the 'blizzard of skulls' he rolled in the game to be so depressing that it sent him on a 16 day bender (a period of constant drunkenness) where he estimated that he consumed two thirds of his own bodyweight in rum every day. The photo shows Hemmingway after he had calmed down a bit, diligently writing up his match notes to send them into the 145 match review team for analysis.

Don't let Bloodbowl break you! We can help!

The 145 is Fumbbl's learning league and we can give you guidance and tips you need to slowly start to understand the game. We have a range of experienced coaches, major, minor and Black box trophy winners who help out and give advice. We also offer one to one mentoring, and we operate a league where you can play against coaches who are also new. We can offer walkthrough and training games for you, and we have a wealth of resources in the strategy library, covering such diverse topics as defensive setups, race guides and, how to avoid tilting in game. The new league has just begun so there is no better time to give it a go.

If you are not new but still struggling, then come and join the graduate league where we aim to bridge the gap between not new and good.

If you are a top coach with something to offer or just want to help us out come along!

First step for everyone is joining the 145 discord where all the good stuff happens

And if that lot still doesn't help we have a massive supply of rum :)
