Famous Teams
Nippon Nibblers, first mentioned in the 2nd edition Stars book as a Nippon based Halfling team.
Background
The First and only famous Halfling team from Nippon were the Nippon Nibblers. They were first seen in the Old World after travelling half way around the globe to compete in a pie eating competition in The Moot. Unbeknownst to the Old World Halflings the Nippon Nibblers had won the All-Nippon Eating Championship from 2460 - 73, 2475-86, 2488.
Largely due to their Sumo Halflings they won the pie eating competition with ease, not only finishing their quota of pies but also clearing the concession stand of their goods before any other team had completed the challenge. This performance went down in Moot folk law and many Halflings to this day take a pilgrimage to Nippon to visit the home of the Nippon Nibblers, and learn the ways of the Ninja and Sumo.
Rationale
Foo Statues were available for Nippon and Cathay forces back in 3rd edition, and their background material specifically stated they guarded the temples in both countries, so this was a straight forward choice for the teams big guy. Loner was removed because this is very weak team. This mean that the team had no TTM option. At first I considered giving the Halflings Throw Team Mate, showing they have learned to throw each other around in an acrobatic way after there years of training in ninjitsu. However I felt it was best to leave the base Halfling alone. And opted to have a Halfling Sumo positional. This player is very similar to the Halfling Hefty gaining Throw Team Mate over their counter part, and also G access. G was given partly because of their increased girth and strength, to give them ability to develop in to a hitting threat. But also to increase their defensive capabilities in terms of development, after all if you lose your two Sumos your team can no longer throw team mate. It was also needed as the team lacks two Treemen like the standard Halfling roster, losing 2 St6 players for St5 players is a considerable blow for halflings in terms of board control, in other words balance was a strong consideration here. Finally because of their increased size they lose Right Stuff so they cannot be thrown.
The Kamikaze Halfling follows the design design principles as the Goblin Doom Diver. Taking a standard stat line and giving the player Swoop. The name given to them felt appropriate both to the region and their role in the team, adding a comedic touch to the team design.
Finally I added the Ninja Flings. Their stat line was a nod to both the ninjas in the game and also Halfling teams from 2nd edition Blood Bowl who had Catch and Ag5. I have dialed that down a little so they now have Ag4 and I decided not to give them Catch as to further separate them from the standard Halfling roster in terms of design. Catch along with having a Swoop player and 2 Ag4 players on the pitch may also have made Throw Team Mate a little too reliable at rookie level.
