It's always a good idea to do some background reading if you want to create a really authentic Warhammer-world team. Often, Games Workshop's Warhammer world draws on real-world mythology and history. Of course, Games Workshop draws even more heavily upon the works of J.R.R. Tolkein, writer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and associated books such as the Hobbit and the Silmarillion.
General
Amazons - Based upon the Amazons of Greek myth:
Lizardmen - GW based the Lizardmen fluff on Aztec, Inca and Mayan history/mythology:
Norse - Draws upon real Norse mythology (maybe that's why so many Scandinavians play BB?)
Elves - Based very much on the Elves of J.R.R. Tolkein. He even created two Elven languages, Quenya and Sindarin (you hear it spoken in the Lord of the Rings films!)
Khemri - Derived from Ancient Egyptian mythology (and loads of Mummy films!):
