The Harlequins are one of the old Dungeon Bowl teams, that eventually opened their game to playing 'full rules' Blood Bowl. Sponsored by the Rainbow Wizards, they were one of the last colleges to join Dungeon Bowl.
Before entering a team, they intently studied the opposition; particularly the colleges closest to their own beliefs. They being the Celestial College (who have the Elven team Celestial Comets) and the Bright Wizards' Blood Axes (A Dwarf/Human team).
They saw the potential in both rosters, but they also saw the weaknesses. The lack of toughness in the Comets, and the lack of finesse in the Axes. Also they didn't have the funds of the Celestial College to routinely hire 3 or more shockingly expensive Elven blitzers.
After a year or so of study, it was clear that Elves were certainly the way to go. They were almost the perfect Blood Bowl player. Just lacking the toughness to stay on the pitch when hit.......or the ability to scoot into extremely tight places, that looked impossible.
This also tied in with their beliefs, that splitting the colours of magic weakens magic, and that magic needs to be kept whole to keep it's power. Curiously, their Blood Bowl research also tied in with current rainbow magic research. This being the roll of the Laughing God in Elven society. This part of Elven society is closely tied to rainbow magic, and a very powerful version at that.
The team was practically forming itself. Being closely linked to rainbow magic, it wasn't difficult to persuade Elves that followed the Laughing God into playing for them; and these Elves are talented players for sure. However, as the rainbow belief is 'splitting magic weakens magic' so they believe this about races and blood bowl. The college would have liked to have taken several races, however 3 is a maximum in Dungeon Bowl. So they thought carefully about what would be the other 2 races.
Dwarfs were considered, they balanced the Elves perfectly. However there is petty conflict between the 2 races, that the wizards didn't fully understand or wish to get involved in, so Dwarfs were ruled out. Humans, were an easy addition. Adaptable, and willing to play with anyone. The 3rd choice, was a little more curious; instead of picking a solid race well versed on the astro turf or the dungeon. They picked Halflings. There was reasoning behind this choice however. This being that they had managed to procure a licence for using Halfling Catchers and if you tie this in with the general menace halflings provided on the pitch by being able to get into tight places; the halfling choice was majorly beneficial to the roster.
With the roster finished; a name needed to be given. It was decided to honour the Elves and their customs (tied closely to rainbow magic) and call the team 'The Harlequins'. The colour scheme was to use the 3 strongest magic colours equally on a fair background, to show their allegiance and belief that all magic is equal.
This thought and attention to detail instantly paid off. The Harlequins were one of the most powerful Dungeon Bowl teams, right off the bat. Since then, they have become one of the most successful, if not the most successful Magic College team in Dungeon Bowl and the open era. Winning the Dungeon Bowl 3 times, and consistently reaching the later rounds in open tournaments.
