Now that mine has gone up again, coach rating is completely legitimate and a great judge of personal character too. |

For coaches with at least a good solid double-digit number of games, Coach Rating is accurate within a certain framework and range, but you kinda have to understand its meaning and limitations.
First, CR doesn't just measure coach skill. It measures the coach's ability to win the games they get against coaches they draw, given no information but the opponent's CR and how much BB the coach has played lately. This calculation happens with and against the rosters and philosophies they play with, in the states of mind both coaches play in, and all the little vagaries that go into finicky stuff like "form" and "expectations", but that stuff isn't included in the calculation. It also goes in with its own ideology of priorities and meaning, albeit one that has been mapped to some analysis.
Even if you could identify what mix of team and coach mattered perfectly, and you could account for luck 100%, and you knew magically precisely what the Platonic proportions of these factors would be, it would still be a blunt instrument, as the game is weird and swingy and so are we.
Perhaps you could take coaches' blood pressure before the match? Even then it'd be really really noisy because it's BB.
Just take it for what it is. It's definitely not meaningless, it can be gamed up a little or down a lot, it means a fair bit per roster but overall is swingy and subject to a lot of noise (both of those, independently). |
