Hello,
I noticed that time keeping and time-outs are a source for lively discussions and I also heard there are ideas to change the current functionality of the client when it comes to time.... but I did not find the related posts.
If there is such a post, please help me out with a link. If not I would be happy to discuss your ideas here.
While I think the current 4min per turn are not too bad, I have the feeling that the manual time-out leads to bad feelings more often than it helps. While it is totally according to the rules to time out, and even more so if you are polite and tell your opponent upfront... Anyways I guess you all know what I mean and you all encountered cases... But some Kind of timekeeping need to be in place to limit game time.
Taking into consideration that different turns take more or less time while the overall, regular game time should not exceed 2h too much (including selection of inducements, set up etc.), I think a fixed time per turn of e.g. 3min and a time per half which can be used as needed of let's say 8min per coach could work. In this case no manual time-out is needed. If the variable time is used up your turn ends after 3min (as it would do today after a time-out)
What is your oppinion? Is there a need to change something and how could / should it work? |

This is my favourite MattDakka post ever. Clear, concise and uncontroversial.
4 minutes is too long on a platform that does all overseeing of rule interactions. I rarely take 2 minutes per turn but then that might be the major contribution to my poor record... |

Blood Bowl is not Blitz Chess.
You know what time you decide / need to dedicate to a game before starting it and that's not the case for many other hobbies.
Plus, some coaches play for the interaction with others. They chit-chat, they learn other cultures and such by meeting guys from all over the wolrd through Fumbbl. And the clock then becomes secondary.
subsidiary question : how do you handle "Brb, door's bell / baby woke up / doggy threw up on the carpet / etc etc. It's in the 8 minutes "flexible time" ? |

I don't think there should be an automatic timer for a lot of the reasons posted. But if you are one of the people that frequently take 4+ minutes per turn, then you maybe should be more considerate of other players time. And if someone asks you to try to speed your turns up, then you should try to do so. Its an awkward ask though, but I've had to do it a couple times because I had time for a 90-100minute game, but not a 150+ minute game. |

We are a community of board game nerds, not a ladder of faceless opponents to play. Automatic timers should never be a thing on this site (unless someone wants to do it in a league or something). I say this as someone frequently bored while my opponent takes their turns slower than I would.
It might be fun to have a league of "speed blood bowl" though. |

Nice post Drrek, I agree with all of that.
Back when I played a fair bit of 7s on FUMBBL I wished there was a reduced timer 'ding' and time-out button available.. for frantic 1min turn 7s! |

Personally I don't consider myself a nerd (if we consider "nerd" based on this definition). Naturally deep respect for all nerds, as long as this respect is mutual.
Timeout :
until there isn't an explicit statement here these timeout discussions degenerates always in the usual 20-page popcorn threads where everybody has his opinion.
If I can add something not present in the previous threads, on the timeout I like the rules used in
NAF Online Tournament where is clearly defined the rule of Timeout.
FAIRPLAY
[...]
• We recommend avoiding Timeouts. However, if you use it, you are not allowed to do it without a first “transgression” and consequent first warning on the chat.
Ex: my opponent exceeds the time one turn, I warn him I’ll timeout next time.
You can only use a timeout if the other opponent is playing their turn, if they give an indication that they need 5 minutes or similar to deal with a real life event then they can’t be timed out for this.
But again i repeat... till this rule is not explicit mentioned to be used for all Competitive games in BlackBox or in Gamefinder everybody has the right to press or not this button at his convenience. |
