In our NCCB league stars up to 250K (the limit the league allows) are fairly common. If you are looking for a lot of big stars I would check out either league or the majors -- get some real big inducement action in those matches sometimes.

Also you can use your money to buy a star, your opponent will then have some money to buy inducements to, but if you really want to play a star you can.

It's common to get enough inducements in tournaments and leagues (scheduled games). Blackbox and Ranked it's harder as you will usually get games against opponents close to you.

New teams in competitive divisions, must play games that are closely matched in TV. However as your team develops, especially in ranked they will be able to play a wider variation of matches.

Thanks for your answers. But between a high-cost star and or a mix of wizard-bloobweiser babes-halfling chef-other, what would you go for as a rule of thumb (I know it might depend, but usually)

This, as an example.
You get the occasional ridiculous match in majors and leagues, although for the really huge differences like the above, you'd want to look at the Black Cup and the Fumbbl Cup matches, seeing as they would have the most lax entry standards for teams.
And once you hit 30 games in R, you don't have any limits at all, so if you both have 30+, challenge someone 1000k above you, just for kicks! :D
