Southern Wastes League: 5 reasons to join
If you haven't heard of the SWL, its a GMT+10'ish league for those in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and others areas who can fit into that rough timezone. (Or those who can stay up really late!)

If you've thought you'd like to try something different from the repetitive ranked or blackbox grind, this is the place for you. There are many reasons why you might consider giving SWL a try. Here are just five for starters:

1) A better bloodbowl experience.

SWL is structured in three levels, Regional, Conference and Premier. There's nothing quite like playing for promotion (or to avoid relegation!) to make you focus on and improve your gameplay. It also makes you take an interest in the other results of your league, tuning in to speculate more often as you cheer and boo every touchdown and casualty.

2) The coaches

The coaches who play SWL are a great bunch of people, from all walks of life. Our IRC channel is a hub of bloodbowl and off-topic chat, banter and downright heckling. Great friendships and rivalries are formed, and many players also end up joining to play other games away from fumbbl.

3) Its tough!

There's no picking of games in SWL. Players have to draft for their team selection and the makeup of the league is carefully balanced. You can't avoid playing those tough teams and as a result your game improves considerably. Combine that with a TR limit at Regional and Conference levels and you have a league that brings out your very best. If you want a challenge, making it to the top of SWL is it.

4) The casual games and KO tournaments

Having SWL for structured league play, the next best aspect of SWL are the frequent KO tournaments, using both the LRB4 and FFB clients. You can have your revenge for a bad SWL defeat by knocking out an opponent in a KO tournament that can be just as competitive as our league play.

5) It's fun!

If you haven't picked this up already, SWL is great fun. Many coaches can't exist without it and go into massive withdrawal in between seasons (when we usually have more KO comps).

If any of this sounds interesting, then check out Our webpage and our our Fumbbl group page. Our IRC channel is #swl, come online and say hi.

1 reason not to is you get a hand in your face if you dare to ask about how to get specific races that are the 'property' of the long term players. Went to OBBA and found fantastic support and a great league, even though i'm from Australia.

Take your lies elsewhere Warmaster, if you come in demanding to play one, and only race, then this is not the place for you. We have controls in place to keep a balanced and fun environment for the greater community, ironically if you had entered the draft with your beloved orcs you probably would have got them.

Actually it would seem by your own words that its you lying. I simply stated that if you ask about them you get the hand. I never demanded anything but was simply told 'you won't get Orcs and unlikely to even get Orcs' so i said the league isn't for me. Seems you are somewhat prickly over being called out Barre. Funnily enough i played Humans for the first season in OBBA and had no issue about it so that somewhat ruins your own lies eh Barre?

There are a host of reasons why it may have been unlikely for you to get Orcs in that instance. Firstly, there may have been a number of Orc teams already playing. Secondly, there may have been a number of what we call "Rock" teams at the time which also limit what is available in the draft.

But simply posting and saying "a reason not to join" is hardly constructive. Everyone is more than welcome to put their favourite team first in their draft list, but the reality is there are only a certain number of spots available. Fair is fair and the admin you spoke to was only being honest.

Heh,,,i have orcs at the moment in swl. you funny warmaster. ( they were third i think in my draft list at the time. )

I hear they're also doing FFB smacks on a weekly basis, leading the way again.

Warmaster...i can't believe we didn't let you in!

Send in a draft list! Please!!! Just make sure you use the right account...

Wow flame on!! I dealt with this so let me digest.

I believe the conversation went like this.......

Im sorry warmaster i cant guarantee you getting orcs.

harvestmouse you are making my mind up for me here, as at the moment there are races more popular than orc.

Sorry warmaster, part of SWLs awsome success is that you have to draft, you may or may not get orcs if you draft.

Well harvestmouse my intention of causing trouble to see if past actions were indeed related to SWL are done. Ill wait 3 months before joining other leagues, most of which i will ditch.

Oh and yes, SWL for me is by far the best league in bloodbowl, let alone FUMBBL.

i see the biggest drawback being the wallabies.

nasty little buggers, with teeth.

ick.

Wallabies are nothing compared to the drop bears. and the snakes. And the spiders. and the dreaded Collingwood Fan.

But all us players are really nice :)

He he aww harvest that sounded rather jaded my friend! I at least would have used some level of insults and inuendo to further my complaint! That conversation was just tepid and lacking my abrasive personality. Disappointing attempt even with the twists to suit your argument. A shame a real shame.

I can't believe we didn't try to keep this guy! What were we thinking?!?
Posted by Foad on 2010-09-27 19:27:14
Leave him alone DC, he's been a member of FUMBBL for over 9 months now - surely because of that we should cut him enough slack and let him dictate the rules of the longest running leagues here. I've heard he's often *considered* donating to the site.

aaaah Chavo, you warm my black heart.

eurgh, someone had to go and mention collingwood fans, didn't they?

Seriously though, I have a very major regret about joining the SWL, and that is that I didn't do it sooner.
Coaches are tops, games are thrilling and have a focus, and the endless strategising and theorising that go on in channel never fails to entertain.
Rules are good and fair, too ;)

Let's see.

I joined FUMBBL on the 12th of April 2003.
I played my first SWL game on the 5th of October 2003, shortly after the league was formed.
My SWL lizards have played 257 games, all of them in the SWL over the last 7 years and are still going despite multiple brutal attempts to force them into retirement (sorry, I'm afraid I'm one of those people refusing to let other people have my lizardman spot which naturally every intelligent applicant must surely put as number 1 on their draft list, for this I humbly apologise).
Given I've only played 632 games in total, that's over 40% of my entire FUMBBL experience and I have no doubt the only reason I've been playing here so long.
