First try of Cyanide's Blood Bowl
I got home from work tonight at about 2am and what was waiting in the inbox? Yes, the two serials required for Cyanide's latest game. The new Pro Cycling Manager!!!!!!!!! No, Blood Bowl. Seems like the ones who pre-ordered it got it one day early.

Anyways, so I've tried it, a little, played three matches now against the computer, just to check out how the mechanics work and stuff. We all know that Blood Bowl is a great game (almost as good as GW's Gorkamorka!), so I had an ok time. But I'm afraid I kinda didn't like Cyanide's try at it. I'm an above average gamer so I kinda got how stuff worked pretty fast, but it was just the little things about it. The huge pile of little things...

How can anyone make a game, in 2007-2009 and end up having the same kinda menus and out-of-play interface like Civilization1 from way back in the 80's?

The music? Oh my God how sick I got of the saaaameee soooong over and over and over again in the menu and the team creation screen. Was there a money issue I didn't know about at Cyanide? Couldn't they make two more songs? Gah.

For some insane reason, when trying to name a Skink Teenviolence, he always ended up being named Teenciolence. Cyanide doesn't like the letter V... Then I changed my mind and wanted to name him Pelvicpea, when typing it out, p... e... l... V, then suddenly his name was: Imbepelc. The client would let me name him Imbepelcpea tho :) Cyanide doesn't like the letter V...

After starting my first campaign team I hit "next" with only 7 players on the roster (for some stupid reason). Clicking "next" doesn't always let you click "back"... So I had to start all over again coming up with silly names...

Finally my team was ready for battle... uhm for playing. You can't actually save a game/campaign during the team creation screen, you have to wait for the first game to begin. And when I got back and restarted the game after making some pizza (<3) the match was conceded (so I had to make a new team again).

So, I finally got going, was up against some Human team. I was the kicking team and BLITZ! Yay, so I positioned my Skink as assist next to the (stupid?) Lineman who was placed at the edge of the field. But then I was unable to target and move any of my other players who wasn't at the line of scrimmage. Christ I got furious!

On the field itself, everything looks nice, but the interface reminds me of the first time I played Warcraft while being used to Red Alert/Command & Conquer. It just felt stupid. I was clicking all over the place. And for the first time in a while, during a game, I felt like looking at the turn timer to check if I've used it all up. And of course I'll get used to it, but I didn't have to get used to World of Warcraft or most shooters or the Gorkamorka tabletop game (again, best game ever) or the Java client we've all used.

I can't see the whole field at the same time, without zooming way back, which left me having trouble to see who was where and what was what. The graphics looks great and all, but I felt like wanting it more "black and white". Like, back in the day, I used to play Action Quake 2, and we always used low graphics to get high fps and the opponent was "signal-green" colored. Graphics is always great in the beginning, but the hardcores end up thinking about gameplay, not scenery. Reducing the detail a lot might be doable, but why don't just hang around fumbbl?

Stupid cut scenes. Man the first time it was awesome, second time ok, third time I wanted to blitz the wall head on in real life. PM me if you figure out how to turn them off.

The AI was a travesty :( Obviously the game is made for multiplayer, but I just think playing on "Hard" should actually make someone who's not tried Blood Bowl get better at the game, getting prepared for multiplayer you know? 'Cause man, if someone wins a few games on hardmode thinking they're ready for multiplayer, and gets a game against someone who's a way-down-below-average-player like me, I'm gonna wipe my feet off their faces.

The game can't be played in windowed mode, which sucks, and I had a hard time tabing out of the game too. Hitting the ESC button doesn't actually do anything. That's weird.

I was expecting the game to be fumbbl/tabletop for dummies, but what I got was even worse. But what the hell do I know, it's probably gonna be the game of the year :p

I'll echo everything he already said and add some more.

Why oh why do we only get an endzone view of the field? How do you turn on the grid lines permanently? What a memory hog. I'm going to upgrade my company laptop tomorrow on my dime because the lag is killing me. What is wrong with having a point and click option to move your guys and whatever.

Again alot of this my be my frustration with the lag times, but dang that was slow.

I just hope it does well because the graphics may pull in a few that fumbbl couldn't.

If its the same as the beta then I'd advise turning the graphics down. They still look great but suddenly it actually runs properly. Those bugs sound pretty lame though, perhaps its a good thing I wont be playing it until the UK release when there might actually be patches available. It'd be handy if someone started a bugs thread in offtopic listing all the known bugs so people could make an informed decision about the game.

Gorkamorka is one of the best!

What kind of copy protection does it have?

Because the old game from Cyanide had the deaded StarForce that simply could kill your computer acting at administrator level.

I think I will purchase the PSP versiĆ³n for fun. But this game will never have the level of strategy that we have here at Fumbbl.

Well i've heard 1 fan boi call it "probably the greatest game in the last decade" and that was before the proper version was even out yet!

I'll be waiting till the hard copy comes out, that way i can let them iron out the major bugs, maybe get Undead and DE in and the rankings can get a bit developed.

Then i think i'll go picker hunting, make up some linemen heavy humans or skaven, or some goblins and wood elves and try to retire some of the lamers who seek out such teams with their Orcs and Dorfs.

dunno if you can hope for good patches. if cyanide behaves like they did with loki. there wont be many.

They threw the game on the market, nice graphics and such, everybody hoped for a worthy diablo follower.

then after the first euphoria of this sweet looking game was gone, the people realized that the game was totally buggy.
people postet those bugs in forums, the forum admins reported them to cyanide.

but they didnt even think of fixing the game, they had there money and they turned to develop bloodbowl.

i personally dont think, that cyianide is able to develop a good game, that works.

I'll stick to fumbbl.

Kondor:
Yeah it doesn't run very sweet. I got a i7 quad core with a 280GTX and I'm having both low framerate and "hickups" even if anisotropic filtering and antialiasing is forced off from the Nvidia control panel. You can use the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom some, and that works fine, just not far enough out. And I'm afraid I haven't found any "Check this option for gridlines" :(

SillySod:
We should!

anisdrin:
I can't imagine they releasing this without some badass copy protection. The install files are 1.5 gigabytes and I just downloaded them off the site. If there's a crack obviously it won't let you play multiplayer, and multiplayer is kinda the point of Blood Bowl. I don't think anyone who's played Blood Bowl before can enjoy more than 5-6 games offline. I wish I could say don't crack it, buy it, but nah, just stay clear of it, at least for a while. Would be great playing the PSP version on the plane or whatever :)

spubbbba:
If someone say it's "the greatest game in the last decade" the reply should always be: You sir, are whack!
I blame you! You should have mailed Cyanide and told them about the Undead :( I understand why Chaos Halflings aren't playable yet, but man, Undead... And only one elf race, and one human (if you count Amazons and Norse as humans, one of those playable would rock). More races will probably be added pretty soon as there's no balance issues involved.

Hoax:
They've already patched it once today :) There's still hope!

Addon to my post:
Still haven't created a multiplayer team yet, I just got so fed up with making teams and coming up with names from my failures earlier this morning.

But I've had a Blitz skirmish game, 8 minute long. It was more realistic, in the sence that I don't think neither myself or my Orcs knew what the hell was going on half the time. Won 3-0, which sucks, 'cause it didn't feel or look like Blood Bowl at all, and I still managed to kick ass, this time on medium difficulty. I'm not sure if everyone currently playing fumbbl will hate it, but I'm pretty sure most of the coaches with 20 games or more here or on tabletop won't like the Blitzmode. I guess it was cool the first time, but then you realize this looks like messed up soccer with people falling over more. And like, the ball was scattering down the field, but I couldn't pick it up 'cause my Black Orc was too fat so I kept clicking on everything else around him but the ball.

In addition I do think the opposition takes way too long to figure out what to do, I wish there was a option to speed the computer up a bit. I wish there was more options for everything.

The "Automatic camera" does sometimes enhance the experience of what's going on in the oppositions turn, but not as much as I'd like it to. And when playing there's some stuff around the edges of the screen, and pictures and stuffs, I have now figured out what two of them are :p

More bugs: If you choose Blitzmode instead of Classic your pre-game screen still says it's gonna be a Classic one, so you gotta change to Blitz there to make it work.

I havent said they didnt patch it at all.

but it was never patched (as long as i waited for it) so that it would run properly.

It would be a good thing indeed when some new guys would find their way to fumbbl via cyanides bb game.

but it would be very lame if people leave fumbbl for this shiny windowdressing.

BloodBowl is for me a childhood memory and Fumbbl and its memnbrs deal with this old game in a very respectful way.

And I think this can and will never happen in the new BBgame.

but maybe Im just a bitter old man. :D

Lord Blade writes in the Cyanide Forum:

during the beta you could disable the auto tracking camera and view the pitch from close to any perspective.

I believe the command to view the grid always was something like ctrl-n or ctrl-t or ctrl-h or something, but again that was in the beta, i dont know if they changed it, but there is no option to toggle check it you just had to find the right keyboard commands.

there were a lot of implemented features in the beta that i imagine remained but there was no way to find all the keyboard shortcuts and no useful user guide. gl if you want to play it, ill be picking it up in a few months in the $9.95-$19.95 rack
