Team Creation
Stars
Allowed, but only as a replacement for a missing player. (See The Rule of Three below)
Wizards
"Some call me... Tim?"
Highly Encouraged!
RR, FF, Apoth, and Cheerleaders
Get as many or as few re-rolls as you want. Apoths ok. Cheerleaders are highly encouraged. (The ladies of Castle Anthrax) High FF is encouraged to keep revenues up.
Coaches
"You're arm's off!"
"No, it isn't."
ALL retired players MUST be made into assistant coaches. This rule exists thanks to my own whimsy; coaches are pretty useless and rarely used; hopefully this will encourage people to keep injured players around, and will eventually bloat the TR of older teams, making them easier targets.
Note: This does not include the 6-8 players you have to retire to create your original squad. These unused players are more "support staff" and don't have the same union-protected lifetime contracts that people who actually stand on the pitch get.
Bank
When you finish creating your team, before your first game, you must dispose of all excess money. You may buy anything, but you may not save for your first match. This is to prevent people stockpiling to afford freebooters for several early matches. You'll make the money anyway.
The Rule of Three
"When forming a team, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out."
All teams consist of 3 players - any 3 players you want. 3 Mummies, 2 trees and a halfling, a tree and 2 wardancers, whatever. Go nuts.
Stars are allowed. You may use them to replace a missing player. If you have only 1 or 2 players, however, you must buy permanent replacements first (if you cannot afford them, you must freeboot if possible to reach 3 fieldable players).
The Rule of Five (three, Sir!)
There is some confusion between the number five and the number three. Therefore, under the following circumstances, you may have 5 members in your team instead of three.
1) Your team is made up only of linemen, and these do not start with block or dodge or AG 4.
Undead teams may mix zombies and skeletons.
2) Your team is a stunty team, and all members of the team have the stunty trait.
3) You can freeboot linemen to bring your team to 5. (Not 4). You must have 3 permanent players (not freebooters or stars) before you may do this. You may do this even if your team is not made up of other linemen. You may not do this on your first match.
If you have the money, you may replace a missing player with a star to reach 3 players AND freeboot 2 linemen to make 5.
Stunty teams with any members with av over 8 may not freeboot to 5. Teams having av 8 or less may freeboot their linemen (the cheapest player on the roster).
Note you MUST make all roster changes before asking for/accepting a match. If you intend to make a change tell your opponent.
The Holy Hand Grenade (& the Flagellants)
A further exception is made for the Holy Hand Grenade.
You may have 5 players if your team is Cheaters or Gnomes. It must contain at least one bomber, and may contain as many bombers or fanatics as you wish. The only other players you can purchase are regular goblins or gnomes.
The Winds of Change
You do not have to commit to 3 or 5. You may start with either and change as time goes on (through use of freebooters or replacing players). However, at all times it must conform to the rules of one or the other.
Teams of 5 may fire down to 3 and then hire anyone they want; teams of 3 must fire positionals and have only linemen before building up to 5.
Keeping at Three (or Five)
A team may never have 4 players, or more than 5. Retire players if you have to.
A team may have less than 3, but must spend every cent on the cheapest available players until it reaches 3.
5-man Cheater and Gnome teams that lose their bombers must hire a replacement (they may freeboot ONE bomber in this situation only) to remain at 5. Otherwise, they must retire players until they are down to 3.
New zombies and rotters may be used during the match they are created as long as they don't raise your numbers above 3 (or 5), i.e. in place of a hurt or ejected player. If you can field 3 (or 5) of your own players, you must do so; you cannot choose the new player instead. The new player must be placed in a corner and not moved. You may NOT use the new player as a 4th man. NO 4 MAN TEAMS. (or 6).
After the match, you may keep them if you like and you still have 3 (or 5) players and your team adheres to the other rules. (You may use a new zombie as a "freebooted" 4th or 5th member, for 1 game. He may stay on if you have a legit 5-man team (all zombies and skeletons) Rotters are not linos and may not be used in this way, but a new rotter could be part of your 3-man team).
