Welcome to the Highland Games
Where the haggis roam free,
The tossers toss their cabers,
And the dancing swordsmen leap for joy!
- Rabbie Burns
This league commerates the great Highland poet and cultural icon, Rabbie Burns.
Each coach builds a team with the same roster. The rosters are varied and so coaches have a number of ways they can build the team.
This competition will be played in an Open Round Robin style from the end of January. The coach leading the table at the end of March will be the winner of the Highland Games Trophy.
The league has been designed to be fun and so feel free to be creative. Choose a name for your clan. Then make a back story.
Rules and Team Creation:
Each coach has 1,000,000 GC to purchase players.
Each team must have sixteen players. If the coach runs out of money, they can simply fill the roster with Haggis for free.
Each coach gets 200,000 GC for bribes.
There is a +1 on the Arnmour Roll for fouls.
If you wish to join the league, please PM the league managers.
The Players:
Bagpipe Player
Who can resist the hypnotic drone of a bagpipe? The constant hum from the empty body of a haggis intrigues even the harshest of music critics. Even Pan could not create pipes which could beguile like these. Well that’s how the Highland Games Marketing Board sells it to the tourists.
The bagpipe gives the player the skill of Hypnotic Gaze. But as it takes two hands to maintain the tune, this player has No Hands.
Over Cooked Haggis and Chain
Around the time of the Highland Games, haggis are cooked en masse to feed the ravenous crowds who attend. If the haggis is overcooked, it becomes as hard as iron. This player has attached a chain to an overcooked haggis and uses it to plough through his unsuspecting opponents.
Highlander Clansmen
The clansmen are the stock player of the team.
Highland Laird
The laird is the clan leader and hence has the leader skill.
Highland Wildman
The wildmen wander amongst the hill peaks. Sleeping where they fall after gorging themselves of berries and haggis. On the pitch, they are uncontrollable vessels of rage as they see each opponent as potential rivals for their prey, the humble haggis.
Caber Tosser
A caber is a large log of a pine tree. Part of the half time fun is to see the caber tossers, launch their cabers high into the air. During the game, however, they will pretty much throw quite a few of their fellow team mates or maybe a wandering haggis.
Haggis
These are small animals which wander the Highlands like lost lambs. They are delicious, slow cooked over an open fire. Fortunately, they are pretty tame and slow, which means they are easy to catch.
Every highland team keeps a herd of haggis, for half time snacks and celebratory post match meals. So, it is expected that they may wander onto the pitch at the beginning of a half or make up the numbers of a beleaguered team.
Highland Fairy
Around the lochs and rivers, glide these fairies. They like playing tricks on ramblers by twisting signs to misdirecting them.
Brownie
These creatures, the size of goblins, sneak into highland houses at night and cause minor mayhem as they hide the occupants shoes, trinkets and beloved items.
On occasion, they might steal gold and silver objects and if they have been offended by the lady of the house, they might even kidnap a child or two.
The more terrible thing is they are rarely caught, such are their sneaky ways.
Sword Dancer
The opening ceremony of the Highland Games includes the leaping sword dancers. Gracefully, they dance around the blades. It seems impossible how they don’t have a toe or even a foot cut off but the razor sharp blades.
Wee Sapling
The sapling is a young treemen who can be thrown by the caber tossers. They make great projectiles, as their high armour means that they are less likely to end up off the pitch.
Loch Beast
At the bottom of every loch lives a monster. They tend to skulk in the depths, feeding off unfortunate boatmen who fall overboard or haggis who wander to close to the water's edge and fall in.
The highlanders sometimes lure these monsters with promises of fresh fish and live haggis. Once out of the water, these lumbering beasts can easily be encouraged to get involved with the mayhem.
