“To paraphrase gken1, the Desperados truly pulled this one out of their arses! True, they were the stronger team, but my last two games vs Flix ended 1-4 and 2-4 with me playing the passing game so I knew any attempt to out-flair him would fail miserably.
Flix has a few "Most Touchdowns Scored"-prizes under his belt from tourneys and rarely passes up an opportunity to score. I knew I had to exploit the harder hitting power of my Darkelf team to the maximum and play an unyielding running game. I would play them as an Orc team, ideally winning with 2-1 after two long, slow advances up the field. With this in mind, winning the coin toss, I chose to kick.
After two turns, the Wolves were up 1-0. After eight full turns, the Desperados scored the equalizer, not letting the wardancers in the K.O. box get to their senses. It has to be said, the strip-ball wardancer never recovered, rolling low the whole game through. True to what I had feared and anticipated, Flix managed to sack my ball-carrier once in my second drive, immediately scoring and obliterating my hopes for an easy 2-1 win. This came after he pulled a Blitz! on the kick-off table, and I recovered the ball again, growing a little too confident. Leap, blitz, lucky ball scatter and whoops there goes the catcher way too far backfield for me to reach. Lesson learned.
Plan B was to draw and win the war of attrition in overtime. After a more careful running game I scored 2-2 in my turn 8, leaving Flix with an opportunity to OTS, an opportunity that luckily was wasted as I got perfect defense. Overtime. Loren Wolves kicking. My tacklers and mighty blow-players went hard at his wardancers in overtime and the Wolves had to relay on their lineelves and catchers for the last few turns. Flix naturally tried to push me over the line, scoring too early and leaving him time to retaliate. In the end, my ace ball carrier Vexx had to retreat from his cornered position and make a pass into a new cage, which burned my last reroll and ended with the ball on the ground. The last remaining Woodelves put tacklezones on the ball which the witchelves could clear. But as I had positioned myself slightly wrong, Vexx had to make one GFI after he moved in and retrieved the ball. Needless to say, he failed and knocked himself out.
Game over and a pity that the final ended with a dice-off. One of the hardest and closest games I ever played, with my opponent constantly keeping me on my toes. Good game, Flix, I believe these two teams are far from done with each other!”
