We fought, we failed.

It was almost over from the start of the first turn since the brutal orc team could bring all of its players (no virus, no morley, no it wasn't me, no I'm the greatest from 4 handis we got and of course no niggled players) plus they hired Ripper and a wizard as a bonus. And the spellcaster worthed his salt in turn 3 or so when he knocked down 4 players with a single fireball with blatant force (1 cas, 2 ko, 1 stun) and that allowed the 0-1 instead of the 1-0. Still we had some chance to equalize since the orc blocks didn't do any serious harm during the entire game and we put some pressure on the ballcarrier. But this was not the game where a cruicial 3+ 2+ 2+ pass 4+ thing fails for the opponent. Instead we failed the 2+ 2+ so the ball remained in safety in the hands of an st4 blitzer. And soon he scored for the deadly 0-2. Little time remained to do something noteworthy but in 2 turns we managed to make it 1-2, and there were still 3 more turns to do the impossible: score vs the full roster of the Orkische DIsziplin when they receive the ball. Again the pressure was there but the 3+ 2+ 2+ pass 4+ thing again worked followed by 2 extra gfi's to add some more spice. And again in our turn we failed one of the 2 gfi's we needed to knock the ballcarrier. Fortunately we had an rr left, so we could place a 2d on the little git but double skulls rarely good for the attacker. 1-3 and game over. Thanks god in t16 I could make a pass with my 30 spps ghoul so that he was able to age after the game. :)

Despite the loss I'm quite content with the performance of my team, I think we did what we could but the awesome wall of green giants and guards was beyond our capacity to handle and that damn good wizard has also played a critical part. Well, undeads are not for tourneys. I'm glad we could make it this far and were stoped only by the most awesome firepower of greenskins I've ever seen in BB.

Grats for my opponent and good luck for the rest fo the tour.

Sometimes life can be surprising ...

Before the match I was very sceptical about my winning chances. Graveyard Afterparty had almost the same STR while getting four handicaps so I considered this to be the toughest match to date. Luckily those handicaps weren't crippling at all, with Buzzing for a Mummy and Duh'-where-am-I for a Black Orc being the worst. The huge sum of money (in my terms :-) I invested in the wizard and Rippa paid off during the game. Of course I have to play my next game without any assistance.

In my lunchbreak I had viewed some of the last games Csonti played. It seemed to me as if he wasn't making any mistakes *at all* whenever he was able to execute his plans on the pitch, and only very few mistakes when he had to play risky. So my strategy was clear: emphasize risk taking on the pitch and force him to play my game instead of his. From earlier PMs I knew that he saw the high ST of my players as the crucial point, which was the main reason for hiring Rippa - a player I consider mostly useless, but has high ST and makes great line fodder.

After the handicaps turned out mostly harmless (well, how harmless can a Buzzing Mummy be? :-) during the game most things went like expected. three or four mistakes (Csonti didn't make much more, which I consider to be exceptionally low) combined with the right luck (wizard!) in the right situations made the thing turn out right.

What would I have done different if I had been in Csonti's place?
On the tactical side: not much. The only *real* mistake I saw was in Turn 2/6 when the center of the pitch was left wide open for me to go for the third TD. Apart from that I consider his plays to be almost flawless.
On the strategic side It occurred to me that two points could have been handled differently to give the game another direction:
- fouling with all 3 DPs to the full extent (BTW: great sportsmanship in a tourney, that Csonti didn't go out on "destruction-derby-mode"!)
- giving Duh-where-am-I to the ST5/Tackle BOB to tone down dange for Count Luthor (Bonehead gave me a *hard* time)
- to me Luthor didn't seem to be fully effective (not one Hypnosis during the match)

But anyway: all those things are hindsight and - as we all know - hindsight always is 20/20. What seems to be a great idea AFTERWARDS, often isn't detectable at all during the match. So: kudos to a great opponent and better luck for the next major tournament (he deserves it)!

Reaction to Reaction:

I'm sorry if my above made comments seemed seemed to be "advice" or something. From your reaction I see you considered them demeaning. For this I apologize, this was not the intention. In fact I discussed after the game with a few people and the above comments about "what I would have done different" are exactly that and not meant to be a destructive critique.

For my defense I have to say that I'm used to discuss games also in my local BB league just like that (which in fact contains quite a few), and also faced some reprehensive comments about my playing style during the game (e.g. about some 1d-blocks I made). But I recognize that this might sound degrading if you're not used to this, and thus offer my public apologies.

PS: I will also refrain from further comments to tactics etc. of the match. I respect your playing skills and didn't want to offend you.
