“Johann von Kleese's minions took to the pitch in good spirits today after learning that both the Halfling team's Treemen were asleep in a small grove on the outskirts of town. Faced with eleven diminutive forms, the Undead lurched into play in classic style. A simple drive down the centre allowed a ghoul, Eric the Fruitbat to score on the third play. The halfling retaliation was surprisingly solid, driving down their left wing with almost the entire team. Eventually however, one of them made an error which allowed a skeleton to blast the ball carrier into the crowd. The ball scattered back to the line of scrimmage where it was scooped up by Eric the Fruitbat. Eric handed it off to his wight teammate Eric the Cat on the next play and Eric loped in to score the second 'down in the dying seconds of the half.
Kicking in the second half, the Undead set up with the Mummies back to counter-charge the newly arrived Treemen. The tactic largely worked, but Eric the Half Bee was felled by a particularly determined group of halflings and was carted off badly hurt. The Undead broke a second Halfling drive and this time it was the wight Eric the Dog who scored.
The half ended with the ball once again in Undead hands, but before the wight could score, a mummy got too enthusiastic and headbutted a halfling. Because this required bending down quite a long way, the undead play ended (I rolled triple 'both down's!)
For the inaugural match of the season, both teams put on quite an atypical display: the Undead winning 3-0, but losing 3-2 on casualties. Both teams will bear watching in future. ”
