“After an easy game beating up elves we were relishing the challenge of facing down someone our own size… well, someone with our hard hitting prowess, the Dwarves!
We were expecting a tough and brutal game, and from the onset that’s what the Dwarves seemed to want to deliver. They all lined up at the LOS, their beady little eyes on our three brave brethren, their tactic to obviously smash us into the ground, reduce our numbers and fall back to surround their ball carrier… but there was no room for a contingency in their tiny minds.
Our three brave warriors stood their ground as the Dwarves pounded at them, taking all of them on and standing their ground. Because of this poor offence the Dwarves lacked the speed or numbers to ever properly cage their ball carrier and a few of our would be blitzes managed to take advantage of their gaping holes and sack the ball carrier before scoring a late TD! And to add insult to injury we even managed to out block the Dwarves with some very careful positioning of our players.
The grumpy Dwarf coach was grumbling at this stage, chuntering under his beard that he had been out bashed by Norse warriors, and even protested against a foul saying that it was not in the spirit of the game… but Mathew Brent begged to differ as he wiped the blood from his boot!
The 2nd half got under way, and the keen-to-redeem themselves Dwarves pre-empted our offence with a Blitz. They swarmed the sidelines cutting off our planned routes, stacked up against our LOS and even badly hurt one of our guys. We were forced back to our own Endzone as the Dwarves moved in, KOing another guy and seriously injuring another… The Dwarf Coach’s mood suddenly shifted… this is what he demanded… even expected.
There was one chance; if we couldn’t beat them with brute force we would beat them with guile and agility. As they stayed focussed on pounding us we positioned two warriors at their flank and waited for the right moment.
It came suddenly, the Dwarves had been suckered in and their poor positioning left us a hole, we went for it… slipping into the hole and making a pass, then a hand off, and that was it… their stubby legs could catch us no more…the game was ours with a 2 – 0 victory! Yay the Norse… it now seems that no one can stand in our way!
Frustrating game for Jock in the 1st half meant I could still field 11 for the second, and good job too as he got a perfect start in contrast, that seemed to threaten a draw, but Ag3 willed out. ”
