“NWL - game 1:

The players complained loudly before the game started...dwarves? DWARVES? Everyone looked sidewise and wondered who would no be here when the morning came around...for the horror stories of amazons facing dwarves was well known.

However...this was not one of those games of horror - at least not for the heroines! The Heroines received the opening kickoff and did not want to get bogged against the tackle and decided to make the questionable call of scoring quickly. Only 2 turns, and Megara scored a go ahead TD to make it 1-0. However, as expected...and feared, the dwarves caged up around their runner, Martin Klebba, and walked down the field, several girls had been carried off the field and the help was trying to revive them. Some pressure on the dwarves forced them to score on T7 instead of stalling all the way until halftime. This ended up being what set up the most critical series of plays in the game. With 1 turn left, the kickoff bounced right along the LOS next to 2 longbeards and no amazons...there was no point in even trying for the ball to get a pass to help build experience. Instead, Atta had a plan...the dwarf runner was not far from the LOS, and there was a gap. The gap was widened with some 2d blocks, and then some quick moving girls focused on the dwarf runner...a block knocked him down and then Atta ran up and threw a hard knee to his back. It was obvious and she was sent off immediately by the ref. However, the damage was done. Martin was out of the game and the dwarf players were enraged.

To start the second half, it was 1-1 and the dwarves receiving...however, bloodlust had taken over and the dwarves threw themselves at the amazons - bashing without stop. However, the ball was not picked up or even marked by any dwarves...sensing opportunity, Lilo darted forward and grabbed the ball...the slow longbeards could not catch her once they realized their mistake...and it was 2-1. There was still time and the amazons - although unhurt...were down several players and the dwarf blitzer moved down the field...in the end, a desperate play with the dwarf blitzer attempting to pass to a longbeard just fell short.

Overall, it was an exciting game - one that differed from many amazon-dwarf battles. To make matters worse, 75% of the winnings went to the amazons, leaving the dwarves with only a pittance...not even enough to buy an apothecary.
