After long weeks of waiting the Rookie Cup XV Finals finally took place! Timezone diffrences between opposing coaches were overcome and elf proffesionals - Melithel's Mesmers faced the undead Curse of Nordberg on a perfect blood bowl day.
The match looked very even, the Mesmers had an advantage in skills, slightly blunted by lack of their thrower (and thus sporting only 11 players!). The former-living players of Nordberg had numerical superiority to match the elves' skill, plus their experienced (nomen omen) Crippled Crippler mummy.
The game could go either way, right until...Turn 1 when a sudden pitch invasion stunned more than half elven players and not a single undead minion! Nordberg's finest promptly took advantage of the situation and scored in a gentlemanly manner, without referring to long-term stalling.
The Mesmer's drive proved just as disastrous, the opening turn saw them in a good position to score, however a failed critical pass (and lack of rerolls burned in the dramatic first moments) resulted in losing another goal
By then the luck meter looked like 35%-82%
Halftime, Mesmers recieving again, and this time the elves show their worth. No failed simple passes, just elfball taken to the highest levels results in an inch-perfect two turn touchdown.
With little time left, Curse of Nordberg began a grinding drive up the pitch and the elves, down on players and luck (although not as dazzlingly as in the first half) found no means to stop the lumbering cage. After a daring final rush the score is settled to 3-1 for the Cursed.
Man of the match in my eyes goes to Crippler, in the first half he scored KOs in every single blitz he made, or at least it felt like it.
As for my personal comments...the luck meter is rather accurate for once. Beerox played confident tactically sound blood bowl, so it would be grossly unfair it was only dice business. However I feel that with just a tad more luck the cup could have gone to the forlorn elves. Or at least they could have brought the game into overtime!
Kudos to Beerox both for winning the cup and making it a pleasant game.”
