In the second match of the H League, played in the heat of a June afternoon/evening, AFC Meatball-Bothnia showed how pressure can get the better of a team. Bothnia were playing on the back of a 4 - 0 crushing against the much-fancied Rusland Rats, and looked very nervy at the start of the match.
The Tacit Urns received the ball from the kick-off and proceeded to form a classic dwarf cage in the middle of the field. They were slowly edging their way down field when the ball was stripped (rather rudely I thought) from their hands. The Meatballs wasted no time in getting the ball down the gridirion, and the delightfully named Ray Copenhagen crossed into the Urns end zone with ball in hand - 1 - 0.
The dwarves worked hard, and eventually made an opening early in the second half, and the popular Tomkins was able to score. Sadly, there was a death on the field, as Stanley, striving as ever for that extra yard tripped in a rather awkward manner, and was no longer!!
Never mind - with just a couple of turns left, the Urns battered their way down the field. But a brilliant play was needed, and a huge amount of luck. Spindlebury had to dodge, pick up the ball, and go for it once. He did all of these things, and it was game over (and a cruel defeat for Bothnia).”
