“The penultimate game of Season 2 saw the wild men of the mountains take on the svelte ladies of the Amazon in a desperate game in which the loser would kiss their slim chance of the Division One title good bye.
The weather was not kind and in driving rain, the Zons won the toss and elected to receive. Whilst they had difficulty picking the ball up initially, the Zons dominated the fringes of the ruck and knocked out Vladim Oslobahn, star berserker for the Dragons. Ultimately, this was a blow that Vladim would never return from for the entire match, but he has been since quoted as saying he was too busy enjoying the hospitality of the visiting Zons reserves... hmmm...
But anyway, the Zons burst thru both flanks and were able to get many receivers into the backfield. An efficient passing play and wham, it was 1-0 to the Zons at the quarter mark of the match.
With the rain clearing, the Dragons received the ball and were unable to repeat the efficient blocking of their female opponents and were forced into a final flurry at the end zone which saw Monty Sion hurl a long bomb into the endzone only to see it fall from the grasp of Blax Landric and into the crowd. 1-0 Zons at halftime.
With Vladim still otherwise engaged, the Dragons began the 2nd half with a much more efficient drive. Concentrating down one side of the field, Sion completed a midfield pass to Landric who managed to hold onto it. The Dragons line cleared a sideline saloon passage and Landric scored despite the pursuit of two Zons... 1-1.
With the season on the line and a draw doing neither side any favours, caution was thrown to the wind. The Zons again tried to burst the Vladim-less Dragons on the flanks but they held firm. The ball was stripped due to fine blitzing by the norse linemen and a scrum erupted. The fluid passing games displayed by both teams evaporated into a wild melee.
Players were taken to the dug-out with regularity suffering knocks to the head, but no one team gained ascendency for long. Until a critical block by the Zons went hopelessly wrong and the ball was scooped to Sion who completed a short pass to Lapi Stoneman. Unopposed, he streaked away in the last moments of the game and scored. 2-1 to the Dragons and they live on! A victory against the Slumbering Skinks could see a trophy coming their way... a loss and they could be saying hello to the 2nd division such is the tightness of this league. ”
