A lively match up between two teams without anyone having honed the block skill meant that turnovers were frequent and best laid plans were often left in ruin! The Blood Pools driven on by Alan “Killer” Kennedy, the only available Vamp for the match-up, had to rely on the Thralls to excel and for once they actually did! From Peter Crunch holding onto the ball in the endzone from a killer Kennedy pass for the early opening score, to “Razor” Ruddock picking up the ball and driving for the line for a second late on it was a veritable success. The general all round play of the Thrawls from mucking in the tackle zones and not giving the Sky Blues room to manoeuvre, dodging without tripping over there own feet, and taking there hits like men was somewhat fortunate but was the sound basis for the Blood Pools first OBBA victory.
Of course, they did almost blow it. A well crafted touchdown by the Sky Blues down the left wing looked like being a mere consolation with only one turn remaining, until the Blood Pools line of scrimmage lapsed in concentration. A blitz by the Sky Blues took advantage of this lapse, and along with the numerical advantage (only 7 Blood Pool players on the pitch) and the ball popping up in the middle of the pitch it made an equaliser a distinct possibility. The Sky Blues effortlessly picked up the ball, covered all the Thralls and looked on the money for the score yet were stopped by a quality final play by “Killer” Kennedy! A successful dodge and blitz on the ball carrier followed by picking up the ball and a swift bit of legging it, was backed up by some classy dodging from the Thralls (especially the lad who avoided the tentacles of the beast) to wrap up the closest Beastmen to “Killer”. It made for an uncomfortable final turn of sweaty palms and furrowed brow wiping, but was ultimately the match winning play.
Again, a tough match, and the remaining five fixtures are likely to remain equally tough. Especially as three games into the league season and not one Blood Pools player has managed a skills roll! Gah!!
Well played wackogenius - a thoroughly entertaining match up. Looking forward to our next meeting!”
