Before the two sides met once again in the Premiership, Purplegoo fired the niggled Wight Vagary II and bought a replacement Hell Knight Alpha, which brought the TR down enough so there were no handicaps.
However, fortunately for me, Mancubus Alpha Turbo, the Block, Mighty Blow, +MA Flesh Golem niggled in the warm up. We surprised Goo by not hiring either Zara or a wizard. Knowing this would be a tough campaign it was decided to keep the coffers full for replacement players.
DFtS made a slow and careful start in receiving the ball, with the coach grimacing in frustration as pushbacks were rolled on the LoS. It gave the amazons time to sort out their defence, and to minimise the blocks. In a game against av8 and regen vs your av7, having enough players towards the end of the half is crucial in any defence!
Purplegoo is perhaps well known for his Metagaming... it's all about the psychology of the game... but it seemed that he was doing a damned good job of sapping his own confidence and that of his team's... and this was evident when the ball carrier started to go backwards in the face of the amazon defence and some weak Necromantic attacking dice.
Taking heart from this the girls applied themselves with renewed vigour. Quickly the new wight Hell Knight Alpha demonstrated his newness to the team as he left himself exposed to an assisted blitz which took him down and spilled the ball. Fortunately for Goo his ag4 Ghoul, Tick II was on hand to recover. But not having learnt from Hell Knight Alpha's mistake he also left himself exposed, and the girls weren't going to pass up a 2nd bite of the cherry... and Mistress II picked up and scored in turn 5/5. 1-0.
With the ref being grabbed by the Necro fans and gagged and bound and shoved in a store cupboard, I really did start to fear for my players, but a foul with a DP with 3 assists resulted in a stun only, and the amazon crowd breathed a sigh of relief, and the necro counterattack stuttered to a halt with some skulls... and the Necro fans started to get in on the act and boo their own team. The 1st half ended with the amazons surprisingly leading 1-0 and receiving in the 2nd half.
However the 2nd half began with a Blitz! from the DFtS side, but again their attacking play suffered from weak dice... leaving the Necros overcommitted down one side. Gradually the girls turned the necro defence to one side and they stormed in for a 2nd TD in turn 4/4, with Mistress II having a strong game this time making the only cas of the game, BHing the zombie puspelsok.
It was going to take a hefty slice of luck for Goo to pull 2 TDs back in 4 turns, but with an ag4 ghoul and 2 able and willing werewolves still around anything was possible.
The Necros advanced, attacking one side heavily, leaving the ag4 ghoul in their backyard to grab the ball. They made good headway, but used up another reroll, and of course the ghoul failed the pickup. This was the final straw for the necro's fans. However as the fans started to leave their seats early in frustration, the more supportive fans were rewarded with the play of the game as Tick II made a pick up in 2 TZ's, dodged twice, made a completion to the other ghoul, who then gfi'd into the end zone for a consolation in turn 6/6. We just had to hope the necros didn't get another Blitz! on kick off!...
...and they didn't. The girls came under heavy pressure though, but had enough players and a little luck to deny the necros any chance of an equaliser.
Tough game which I know Purplegoo will rue, but the plaudits have to go to my zons who didn't really put a manicured foot wrong all game to secure the team's first ever win in the Premiership.
Thanks for the game as always Goo. That makes our head to heads 4/4/5... so I'm creeping back against you! :)”
