“This was mostly a fun game except for the last few turns when the dice turned against me with a vengeance. Before that, it was competitive. Despite a rash of early boneheads, my ogres recovered enough to knock the ball away from the hobgoblin carrying it. I had a long shot at a TTM score at the end of the half, but the goblin wasn't able to pick up the ball.
I got the ball in the second half, and I thought I had a great opportunity after my opponent's hobgoblin rolled a skull/pow on a blitz, knocking both himself and the ballcarrier down. My plan was to have the downed goblin retrieve the ball and hand off to another goblin nearby, who would have been able to scoot down the right sideline. The early turnover by my opponent had knocked down the ball, but it had left his other players out of position. There was a lone dwarf covering the backside, and he could be avoided. Most of the other players were entangled with my ogres on the left half of the field, and the few that weren't, I figured I should be able to knock out of the way.
Foolishly, I did the ogre blocks first. When one popped up double skulls, I felt forced to use my reroll for the turn. Needless to say, I regretted this when the goblins botched the handoff, leaving them and the ball vulnerable in my backfield. The game was basically lost on that turn.
Doktor_Feelgood did a great job of keeping my ogres tied down so that they could not pressure his players that picked up the ball, preventing me from applying pressure to the ball and forcing the quick score that would allow me a shot at the equalizer. Then again, with the dice I was rolling from that point on, it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway. I entered my second bonehead spree of the game, and when I did throw blocks, I threw double skulls as often as not. The hobgoblin was able to take a nap by the goalline until he strolled in on Turn 16.
Hats off to my opponent for taking advantage of my mistakes and for being a pleasant rival throughout. ”
