“It wasn't quite "one for the ages", but the Week 3 match between the top-ranked Dark Underground and close-second Freshwater Felons did contain a little bit of everything for the viewer's pleasure. A league-record 3 touchdowns were scored (all by the Felons), a whopping 47 rushing yards were galloped (83% by the Felons), plenty of lucky rolls (definitely dominated by the Felons), and there were even incompletions and botched "Go For Its" galore (....all by the Underground).
After a quality deep kick isolating the dwarven return man, the Felons blitzed the backfield with an intimidating quartet - two Sauri for gorin', two Skinks for scorin'. The dwarves failed to match the physical nature of the beastly line-guarding Saurs, and the Felons turned their advantage into a quick score.
In their second possession, the Underground prepared a more patient and guarded offense, setting up a fence of Longbeards along the southern edge of the field. But a ferocious blitz, not to mention the reckless play of the hard-hitting Gibroni, shook the ball loose before the advanced troops could clear a path. The Felons logged another scoop'n'score just as the halftime whistle sounded, forcing the embattled Dark Underground to concede the points AND kick the ball away after halftime!
Fortune took a turn as the Felons set up their attack, mischeviously undercutting their blocks and sitting a couples Saurs on their backsides - as the home crowd cheered loudly, a Dwarven runner broke for the goal line uncontested! But success was not to be, as Gibroni once again proved his fearlessness by knocking the ball free and allowing the Lizard squad to reassemble. It wasn't long before the skinks once again outran the Dwarven defense, tallying a third score and putting the game well out of reach with mere seconds remaining.
It was a fantastic match for Gibroni, who was the unnofficial star of the match with 5 blocks, a TD, and a team-high 19 (yards?). Team Captain Larry Lacoste was deemed the MVP by the league after his 8-block performance, while the beastly Carnivorous Carl was decidedly underwhelming after a series of Dwarven tag-teams kept him on his buttocks for most of the 2nd half.
POST-GAME REPORTS:
The Felons have no intent to purchase players or upgrades as we prepare for our upcoming game against the Immortals.
“"No questions," coach Mordae waved off the reporters as he shepherded his tired dwarves into the locker room. "I'm just glad we made it through in one piece."
The Dark Underground looked decidedly inferior to the Freshwater Felons, and after being shut out for the first time in their history and giving up three touchdowns, they go into their bye week as a team looking for answers. The potent blocking combinations that had served them well against their previous two opponents managed only to knock down a couple of the well-trained Saurus blockers, and the Felons' skinks managed to roll away from several potentially devestating blows to emerge unscathed.
Worse, the dwarves only once managed to cross mid-field, on a messy turnover that left most of the Felons on the ground. Despite the prime scoring opportunity, Fire was unable to escape, and the lucky skinks were able to catch up and knock the ball free only yards from the end zone.
After the game, team captain Bloodstone was accosted by a reporter. The howl, "Those thugs that call themselves the Horde better watch out!" was heard across the stadium, followed shortly by the sickening thunk of the reporter's head hitting a nearby wall.
Breaking Update:
The Dark Underground announced the hiring of a second troll slayer, a massive dwarf whose given name is Onyx but whose few living friends call him "Black". Coach Mordae immediately put him on an aggressive training regimen, compressing an entire off-season into two weeks in preparation for the last remaining match against the Burning Horde.”
