It was a glorious day for a ball game, as 46,000 rabid fans packed into Shadow Field for the final game of the Dark Underground's inaugural CBBL campaign. Tension was high, with a place in Blood Bowl I on the line. The Burning Horde, fresh off their best showing of the year in a 2-2 draw with Desperados and Gin, were eager to put themselves in the win column and play spoilers for the Dark Underground hopes.

The dwarves received the kick but were immediately blitzed by the bloodthirsty chaos warriors. The ball bounced favorably for them, and the two teams set to scrumming and slugging. The bout lasted the entire half, with neither team managing to hold onto the rock long enough to make any real advance towards the end zone. Both apothecaries were well-employed, saving players from certain death.

The second-half kickoff went deep enough to be fielded by the Horde, with Shatterhorn finally corraling the ball after his teammates' bobbles. As the chaos team advanced and set up their wall, the dwarves seemed helpless to stop the progress until a series of aggressive blocks helped stall the drive just before it reached midfield. The dwarves casually threw the Shatterhorn out of bounds, but the ball took a fortuitous bounce for the Horde, away from the dwarven runners poised to make a play.

With less than a quarter to go, the stout dwarves had finally knocked out enough chaos warriors to boast their usual advantage, 10 on 6. Then, their luck grew even stronger as longbeard Slate, assisted by Lightning and Fire, threw a wicked block that shattered the leg of the Horde's minotaur, Mulcana. The crowd roared with delight as the Underground pressed their advantage, pinning down the ball carrier, Carac, in a 4-on-2 advantage.

The Horde did not give up, and with a crafty play were able to spring Carac from the trap. But with numbers against them, it was only a matter of time before 4-on-2 became 4-on-1, with the remaining chaos warriors tangled up in blocks. Carac showed his slippery side, evading yet another series of tackles before Underground's latest acquisition, "Black" Onyx, caught him with a nasty forearm shiver and sent him to the bench seeing stars. Onyx corraled the rock and, when the only chaos warrior within striking distance tripped, was able to walk into the end zone untouched as time expired!

The dwarven fans immediately rushed the field and raised Onyx on their shoulders, cheering the victory that will almost certainly qualify the team for Blood Bowl I. Onyx showed his small good natured side when asked about the victory, managing to answer without attacking the reporters. "When captain Bloodstone got KO'ed, I knew it was going to be up to me to make something happen. I'm just glad that coach had enough faith to keep a rookie like me on the field late in the game, and I'd personally like to thank Granite for tripping that chaos thug so I could score. Long live the Dark Underground!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, drawing another roar from the crowd and a throaty rendition of the team's famous drinking song.

In addition to the game-winning TD, Onyx also showed off his skills as a blocker, logging a team-record 19 blocks with 1 casualty. Thunder was given the crowd MVP for his heroics in holding off the Horde's second-half drive long enough to force the game-changing turnover.
