“Forget the scoreline - till turn 5 of 2nd half chetbakers' lizardmen were proper kicking my butt. Only failed blocks late on (I think 4 all game, and all in the last few turns) decided the outcome as, till then, it had been plain sailing. I took the lead thanks to speed of the werewolf and versatility of the wights (decent ma, block) then struggled to keep players either on the pitch or on their feet as the joggers asserted their authority. Until the last 3 turns the joggers had enjoyed a clear 15-20% luck advantage, whereas mine, though not exactly catastrophic, was certainly turn ending on more than one occasion. When the Lizzies scored in turn 4 2nd half and we set up for the fifth, I could only see a draw at 1-1 the best result. Those Saurii were near impossible to shift.
Only thing I'd suggest to Chet is to be more adventurous with the skinks - they dodge like few others can, and I don't think he dodged them once all game. The Saurii don't need any coaching - they had me on the floor and down for the count on so many occasions my options for a turn were generally to get up and blitz once, often at -2 dice blocks.
The one area of weakness for the Joggers was picking the ball up, and several failures left me sighing with relief. That, coupled with turn ending block failures - after a game of failing nothing - presented me with rare opportunities to score. One had Vincent (#4) the receiver of a quick pass after a gfi by El Mariachi. Another GFI saw him score.
In the last turn a failed block from the Joggers left the ball loose but plenty of work to do. El Mariachi scooped the ball up and had 2 successful GFI to score and make it a very flattering 3-1 scoreline. Deserved? Hell no, but I'll take it, first win for this team and I hope a turning point - a harder hitting team would have left my side battered and broken. Once the joggers have more block skill about the team they'll be a force, but their skinks need to do more of the work in the meantime.
Good game, look forward to a rematch! Chet is a great sport and took the death (a rare knockdown from a block, this time by El Mariachi) in good spirits.
I think it's games like this, when you creep over 50% luck only in turn 16 after a game full of getting your ass kicked by the dice and your opponent, that you appreciate most, more so than those rare 5 or 6 touchdown drubbings that you sometimes get to hand out when the dice fall for you. ”
