“A grueling match between two short and highly armored teams was hyped to be the 1st matchup of season 2 to see if the newly formed Dorf Grins would pose any threat for title contention in the coming season.
With Pittsburgh pushing around the Dorf Grins on the initial kickoff little was accomplished other than to establish LOS presence. And with Limas Sweed promptly being requested to leave the stadium for poor sportsmanship after a slightly late hit that left put a Dorf on the sidelines KO’d (cmon ref, let the boys play), it quickly looked like it was going to become a classic ugly defensive blocking battle.
The tone of the match changed when the Dorfs badly hurt the Pirates minotaur Chuck Green, crumpling what looked to be a promising offensive drive and pushing the Pirates scrabling for a new offensive play. The Dorfs missed a golden opportunity to help Pirates star ‘The Bus’ Bettis go do a meet and greet in the crowds when they failed a pair of gfi attempts. Bettis made the Dorfs pay for their failure, salvaging a TD on their final play of the half picking up the ball and punching into the endzone.
Score 1-0 at the half for the Pirates
The Dorfs turn on offense and they started promptly by giving the Pirates rookie lineman Alan Faneca, Jr., an injury he will remember for the rest of his career, and into his retirement too when that day comes. But the Dorfs failed to compensate for the speed of the Pirates bulls and promptly were relieved of the ball and left with what appeared to be an excellent defensive position but not what they were expecting. Bettis again showed his nimbleness picking up the ball in the midst of dorfs and blitzing and dodging his way to another quick TD. With their superior strength, the Dorfs got the Pirates down to just 6 men on the pitch by the end of the 2nd half, but to no avail.
The Dorfs poor ball skills were only to be matched by their poor blocking skills and were only exceeded by their poor coaching as they failed several sets of gfi’s threw many blocks that left them seeing skulls, but were ultimately done in by their poor performance of their coach, who took full responsibility in the after match interview.
“If I could blame this match on the boys, I would. But, even with their poor performance and inability to do the simple tasks we asked of them, in the end it is our fault as the coaches for not preparing them mentally for what they were going to face out there. We asked them to do things their bodies are not capable of, they just aren’t all that special, so we have to go back to the drawing board and put together a game plan that will better suit their abilities.” ”
