“I thought this was a really interesting game in terms of tactics and dice, so I thought it worth a brief write-up. One of those games of BB where you can't work out if rolls or the things you did made the difference, you know?
Someone told me (can't remember who exactly) IRL at a tourney last weekend they knew my HE for being famous for failure and just being prone to snapping and 1ing at all times, and that's sort of accurate in my head. I love HE for their potential, but I always feel a bit cursed with them. Is that pessimism ('woe is my unlucky self, waaaaa?') or warranted? Dunno.
Anyway, I hesitantly accepted this game along the lines of never turning down a fair challenge, and 11 Elves kicked to 16 strong Vamps with 3 DPs. Interesting tactical choice the first, vicius chose not to foul. I got the ref first kick, but without a DP and with the numbers as they were, wasn't about to put the boot in. I got some Lions deep and a Tackle Daunt 1db, push, chose not to RR. I think it forced a T4 or 5 score, so there, I thought it was a good tactical leave. 2 blokes KO'd, I rolled ok to purposely score in T7 for 2 shots at it. IT, and 2-1. OTS attempt, and PD, all very harem, scarem stuff, back and forth. Watched from behind a pillow.
2nd period, and bouyed by my early shot, I scored swiftly instead of trying to tie, and defended with 11. Now the tactics / dice stepped up; still no fouls, some bloodlust kicked in. No Guard for the Elves meant I had to go with 1DB Daunt or -2db Strip at all times, whilst making sure the Vamps couldn't break free. A double skull put me in position to Chainpush the Daunt in for 1d, but all the movement to get the hit meant a crap scatter left me really stretched. Then vicius started Pro'ing pushbacks and making dodges leaving me holes, not things that should fail, but the conservative purest wouldn't do it, and I got enough fails for another thinking man's push shot. Got a jammy KO, good scatter, and avoided disaster on 4d against to get the 3-2.
Really interesting fare, dice? What we decided to do? It's an interesting one. I feel in hindsight with how I began to roll in the game (as that RL person pointed out), the 11 Elves were doomed to failure. A stall and a foul or three may have been in order? Or would that have pulled them too far away from position, as heavy fouling often does? Were the dice I finally got karma or bad fortune on vicius's part?
Fun, interesting, rematch needed. I think I could watch that replay 3 times and have 3 opinions. vicius was fun to play. ”
