NWFL Season 3 Superior Bowl

This game can pretty much be summed it with one simple observation…in 3 halves neither team needed their apothecary. Considering the Sucker’s are mostly AV7 that should tell you something.

The Blasters received the first kickoff and moved upfield in a standard cage. Which is to say, the Suckers got lots of shots at the ball, as no cage can keep these guys out. Despite quite a few hits on the ball carrier, the Suckers never posed a serious threat to steal, and were down to 6 players by the time a bouncing ball landed in Scarbrand’s hands and he rumbled in for the T8 score.

To start the second half the Suckers, who really didn’t want to go to OT (they figured it was only a matter of time before the Orc cas-train started rolling) went for a quick score and Count Asmodai ran it in on T2.

The subsequent kickoff was a Blitz! Although just out of reach of the Suckers, they nonetheless made a strong push up field on the ball side and got a tz on the landing. The Blasters recovered nicely though and took possession. But the delay of having to secure the ball deep in their backfield combined with relentless ball-pressure meant they were unable to score the winning TD in regulation. (By the end of regulation the Orcs had finally gotten their first cas which was regenerated, and the KO box was literally overflowing).

The Blasters received the kickoff in OT and began their push. Within two turns the Vampires had blitzed the ball and forced a desperation dump-off. It was unsuccessful, but again the Suckers couldn’t capitalize. The Blasters continued their push up the left side to within scoring range. In desperation the Suckers (now down to 6 players again) collapsed on the cage and hoped for the best.

The Orcs knocked some players around but were down to either running the ball in or taking a free Troll block on a Thrall. Now, the rookie Troll hadn’t played until this drive, and this was his first block of the game. Double skulls. Despite this, the Orcs still appeared to be in a good position with players still surrounding the ball carrier.

It was just enough of an opening however for a Type A Negative to streak in for a 1d blitz. Every sucker had moved by then except the Count of Counting. After flattening the ball carrier the ball bounced right to the Count, who snatched it up despite the best efforts of 2 Black Orcs marking him! Needless to say, he streaked off down field. The Orcs made a valiant attempt to get back but there was no stopping Counting for the go ahead TD on T5.

With just three turns of OT left the Orcs were in a pinch. On the final kickoff they pushed up the right sideline with two players and had the Troll with Goblin combo in reserve on the left sideline. Unfortunately, this only left a scattered wall of green between the ball and the Sucker defense. The Suckers are accomplished cage breakers…they cut through a wall like hard fangs thru a virgin’s neck and quickly had the ball behind the Orc line with plenty of defenders. At this point the Orcs threw in the towel in disgust and just allowed the final TD by Type B Negative (who promptly aged a niggle following the game!)

Following the game the coach was asked about his teams play:

“Well, the lads played well, real well. Counting and Asmodai befuddled those brutes all game. But this win was all about the preparation.” After looking around he leaned in and whispered, “Three things secured this win and I take credit for all of them.”

As he spoke he ticked off the points on his fingers:

“One, we had a spy in the PB Organization and knew they were hiring Nobbla. Just before the match we kidnapped his mother and let him know he wouldn’t be seeing her again if he fired up the saw. You think it was an accident he went 0-7 with that thing until he finally got it going with 2 turns left in regulation? Hahaha, he may be a crazy bastard but he loves his mother.

Two, most Vampire organizations treat the Thralls like they’re expendable. Not here. A trip to The Illustrious Magician for warding talismans for the whole team really paid off. Those Orcs couldn’t keep us down! Hell, did you see that hit Counting took on T1? Didn’t even faze him!

Three, on the way to the stadium the whole team stopped off at the Shallyan Therapeutic Convent for the Morally Wicked for a little…leisure time. The Vampires were stuffed and the Thralls haven’t been so focused in months! Those Orcs never knew what hit em!”

Seriously though, I gave my team a chance somewhere between slim and none for this game. I watched the manhandling the Blasters gave the Crusaders and figured my cas box would be overflowing by the start of the 2nd half. The unbelievable number of pushes, an amazing inability to get any cas and a full bench kept me in this one until a couple lucky breaks opened it up for me. That Troll block reminded me of Deverel’s failed 2d tackle blitz vs. the Amazons that knocked me out of the playoffs last season.

That’s Nuffle for you!
