“Spectre Valley Open (August 2010)
Game 1 (oh yeah, forgot to mention this was the first match played for the August SVO. Go me and crimsonwolf!)
Tough game against a good coach that I have played a lot of games against. I won the toss and elected to receive. Got lucky by getting 2 CAS (both BH) early in the 1st half. Although we had a slight ballhandling malfunction on t1 (tried a pass with both the pass and catch skill, but the catcher fumbled it), but recovered quickly. With the numbers advantage was able to stall out 7 turns. Defense held for 2 turns and went into half with only 1 KO (Mi-Go II who never did return).
2nd half we got Sweltering Heat but surprisingly no one was effected. This was good news for the Gemfinders as they only had 10 players. I set up in a prevent defense to try to slow the cage down. On the kickoff, Ghatanothoa the Usurper was hit by a rock but was only stunned. The dwarves started off by stunning 2 zombies on the LOS and getting the ball into a tight cage. I responded by throwing undead bodies at them, using my mummies to get 3-die hits whereever I could. I was able to force the ballcarrier down the pitch, and finally knocked it out. However, I got greedy and had Ghatanothoa try to pick the ball up in traffic even though I had it covered by 2 players. This nearly cost me the game as he booted it back into dwarven protection. Coach crimsonwolf dodged 1 runner away and downfield, while the other runner, Dkomr, stood up, grabbed the ball, and made a perfect pass to Lora. I set up some blocks in the unlikely event that I got the ball back and had to use my reroll to avoid a double skulls. With very little to lose and all my easy moves done, I moved a zombie in for the assist (using 2 gfis), then blitzed with ghoul Glaaki (he of the buttered fingers). He may drop easy passes, but he also dropped the runner with a lovely POW and was able to cover both the runner and the ball on a fortunate bounce. Lora stood up, blitzed Glaaki but only got a push. With sidestep, Glaaki was able to remain covering the ball and the runner. With a reroll in his pocket, plus Sure Hands and Dodge, Lora dodged in (using the skill reroll), picked up the ball, and tried to dodge out. Crimsonwolf rolled a 1, quickly went to his last reroll, and followed it up with... another 1! Snake Eyes at this crucial juncture robbed him of a TD and the tie. And to add insult to injury, Lora was stunned from the fall. Glaaki got the ball and handed off to Yidhra, who then threw the ball downfield to a waiting Ghatanothoa (who had recovered from being hit by the rock). A few more blocks were exchanged, and Ghatanothoa ran it in on T8 to seal the victory.
Good game, crimsonwolf. You were robbed on that dodge roll, but I've been there too so I know how it feels. I'll definitely make the most of this victory and try to leverage it into a tournament victory. Thanks for the game, and hope to see you again soon.
Team didn't make much money, but gained FF. This was acceptable as I'd rather have FF than money right now (I don't have anything to spend cash on yet). We'll bank it for a tourney that allows star players, or possible replacements. Crimsonwolf's fans, by contrast, were not happy with the result as evidenced by the -FF. On the bright side, being crafty dwarves, they collected their share of the gate money (and possibly some of ours) before the game started :)
