“The Batrachians and the Soilers paired off in a Divisional matchup sure to set the tone for the playoff run in the second half. Although they won the toss, the Soilers elected to kickoff.
After some mighty ineffectual blocking Oneel failed a pass to earn his way to Exp. The Woodies jumped, flooding the backfield with players. The froggies were cool though, and screened off an escaped route, one catcher handing off to the other to advance the ball. The Soilers made a play for the ball, but a failed leap allowed the Batrachians to move even deeper into Whoseton territory vs. the over-committed Soilers.
But the woodies recovered! Not exactly pressuring the ball, but giving clear indication the the frogs had one turn of breathing room before the hammer fell. Not one to waste an opportunity, Harbog called in the score.
The Soilers received with loads of time left, but the kick was deep and the defense was stout. The Krox and the blitzers severely limited the wood elves 'non-risky' options, and by taking out the scoring threats they appeared to have the half in hand. But no! The Soilers had a play up their sleeves and executed to perfection! Right up until some snakes wrapped themselves around the scorer and brought him down. Half ended 1-0 Batrachians.
The second half started with even numbers (much to Harbog's chagrin!). The Soilers elected to probe the Bouncin'more defense while keeping the ball deep, well outta blitz range. The Batrachians, with the lead, were more than happy to play a deep defense, using all their skills to prevent a woodie breakthru.
After 4-5 turns of manuevering to not much effect, it came to crunch time. The woodies needed to move or be denied. A wardancer blitz cleared a path and the Soiler thrower did his part. But the receiver didn't have as much luck. Once again Nuffle struck! A fail on the catch (or was it a dodge?) left the ball lying open. The Batrachians were quick to scoop up the loose ball and after a failed desperation blitz they advanced the ball and tossed it to Reeds for the 2-0 victory.
What a match! The last team without a loss or tie in the league was taken down! Coach Harbog after the match:
"Well, what to say? We played well, but coulda played a whole lot better. Our inability to hurt those woodies really left the game in jeopardy, and only some severely bad luck on their part prevented the equalizer.
But we'll take it. After a couple early setbacks its nice to put together a string of wins, and we'll be in the running for the Division Championship in the second half of the season."”
