My first game in this tournament was a hard-fought affair against a tough lizardman team, and this one didn't look any different. With 7 blodge players, I expected my 3 tacklers to have their hands full, and the lizzies would always be dangerous as long as their AG 5 skink remained on the pitch. Besides, the inducements could prove very helpful for the lizzies, with the wizard making my caging dangerous and the the babes bringing all their KOs back.
Chuck Versus Blood Bowl started the game on offense and Jill showed she was fired up for the big game by cassing a saurus on the very first block of the game. In fact, Jill was very much on fire, netting a casualty on each of her first four blocks. This should have made things very easy for chaos, but a failed early pickup on a deep kick allowed the lizzies to apply pressure, while timely casualties on the lizzie side evened up the numbers somewhat. In addition to Jill's casualties, Jeff managed to badly hurt the AG 5 skink on turn 3 (apoed), which made things much easier for chaos. The lizzies used their wizard not much later, and managed to knock down 3 players out of 3, even scoring a badly hurt on Anna the ball carrier (apoed). However, they couldn't get away with the ball due to having only one skink on the pitch, which is why the chaos team did manage to make it 1-0 at half time. However, as a consolation, the lizzies killed Chuck on their last turn, scoring their fourth casualty of the half (five for chaos).
The lizzies had a pretty good chance of one-turning an equalizer on their last turn, especially after I left them a chance to chain push after a perfect defense. However, the odds were too steep and second half started at 1-0 to chaos, with the lizzies fielding 10 players against 11.
If the first half was a cavalcade of casualties, the second was anything but. This resulted in much more tactical, position-oriented game play with the lizards eventually moving to scoring position on turn 4. On my turn, I decided to take some risks, moving my AG 4 tackler next to the ball carrier and dodging my ST 5 tentacles chaos warrior there as well. However, Hitonagashi made a nice move, blitzing down my AG 4 beastman with a skink and chainpushing my chaos warrior to be crowd surfed by his kroxigor. This gave him enough space to stall until turn 7, when he was pressured to score after using his RR on double skulls.
This left me two turns to equalize which was going to be tricky, but certainly possible with two AG 4 players, 2 RRs left, and 10 players against 9. However, a riot put an end to that, leaving me only a turn to cause damage (another casualty and a KO). This meant that we were headed to overtime, with the coin toss very likely deciding the winner. History repeated itself, because I won the coin toss again, just like I won both tosses in my first FC match against another lizardman team.
Starting the overtime with 8 players against 10, it seemed that only a blitz would give significant hope for the lizzies. This was not to be, as Nuffle cruelly took out another saurus with a thrown rock, and another KO combined with the fifth casualty of the game for Jill meant that the lizardmen were down to five players. The AG 5 skink bravely tried to get the ball loose with a -3d blitz, but ended up only badly hurting himself on a dodge. Thus, the rest of the overtime was just mopping up for Chuck Versus Blood Bowl, who ended up clearing the pitch and skilling up two of their players. The final result was 2-1 for the chaos team.
Thanks for the awesome game, Hitonagashi! This one had it all, with a lot of casualties in the first half, nice stalling and chainpushing by the lizzies in the second, and lucky kickoff results in the end. It all came down to the last coin toss, which I was lucky enough to win again. This was definitely one of my most memorable games, and it didn't hurt that we had about 111 spectators at the peak!”
