“Halifax went into the game looking to play a disciplined "elf" game with a full team-effort being key.
The boys did a great job on the offensive drive keeping blocks against to about 10 by turn 7. Positioning for a end-zone drive was made difficult by a patient defense not keen to over-commit. Duane leaped out of a bit of a tough spot on turn 8 and made a beautiful pass to the receiver who bobbled the ball, twice and failed miserable. A heart-wrenching end to what was a picture perfect drive.
Defense was a bit more frantic with the Woodies desperate not to give-up either position or yardage and for the most part, they did just that. Again a cautious Chaos team was not eager to play too loose of a game and maintained a very tight defense.
The only hope was to force GFIs on the last turn which is exactly what happened but, as what happens often when relying on luck to prevent a TD rather than skill, the second GFI was a success and the CW scored on the final turn.
What very well should have been a 0-0 or 1-1 tie morphed to a disappointing loss for the Halifax boys. Savesh was told to find his own way to Hamilton for the next game as the team blames the loss on him. Maybe he knows he's about to be retired and failed the catch on purpose?
...and the $10K gate really made the loss harder as the team wont be able to hire a new WD for at least 2 more games, if not three...
A valiant effort all for naught...great game though. A real strategy battle. I was hoping for more aggression from Chaos but they played it really smart and kept all the doors closed.”
“This game was a baffling disappointment for the rabid blood thirsty Bomber fans. A chess match of agility versus strength under the a blazing sun, Winnipeg fans were puzzled by their teams lack of bloodlust and apparent focus on carrying the odd-shaped-ball-type-thing.
The Bombers kicked and the Hrungnirs easily collected the ball keeping it safe and deep in their end. Winnipeg was careful not to over-commit while Halifax hit and dodged out, as each side attempted to get the man advantage. Undaunted by either side the referee's sent more players off the pitch than both teams combined.
The Bomber's zone defense seemed effective until the dying minutes of the first half when Duane Hardhammer finally broke through the Bomber line and passed to a wide open Savesh in the endzone. Fans held their breaths the ball sailed through the sunny sky only to watch it drop to the turf as the whistle blew.
Athe the start of the second half, Halifax roared back to life, blitzing the ball in the Winnipeg midfield. Obby Khan collected the ball and rumbled up field. The offensive line just couldn't get their fearsome mitts on the elusive elves and the cage weaved left and right working into scoring range.
On their last play of the game the bombers were faced with a wall of woodelves. Pushing and shoving it took every block and a GFI blitz to clear a path to the end zone. Obby sprinted through the gap, burning the final RR on 2 GFIs into the endzone for the only TD of the match.
The Bombers kicked to Hrungnirs, but the dying moments of the game was a formality as the elves were unable to build a push one turn TD with the three warriors on the line.”
