“UI VII Light Qualifier - Golden Lanter: 3rd round
Again we were facing a lustrian team, but this time they were our slaves, the lizards!
Frogabilly could rely on amazing ballstealing abilities, but the Lamentations had a wizard and 8 big sauri/kroxi to screen properly their little ones.
On paper, it seemed like frogs would have had a great edge until they numbers would have fallen down. And the overall impression on field was that, even if touchdown results went on the opposite way: starting with a lizard edge and ending with the frogs filling the gap and taking the match.
First half was entirely dominated by frogs: they stole the ball countless times, making their opponent burn RRs and hoping to induce a wizard use recovering the ball: but the bounces didnt allow any attempt. Here the cowardn choice to make Ciondolo sit on the bench was heavily paid. In the end the lizzies, RRless, managed to get back the ball and survived 4 dice of blitz on the ballcarrier: TD. We had two turns to equalize with 2 RRs. Sadly we misplayed the order of actions, wasting the RR to cover a blitzer while a failed gfi KOed Ciondolo. This put us in a difficult situation: we had to rely on a 3+ pickup and five 2+ rolls to blitz our way free to the score but failed.
0-1 in the half that was supposed to be ours and the match seemed up-hill.
Second half on the other hand saw a quick TD from the frogs to have time to annoy their cousins. Numbers were lowened on both sides, and the lizzies again lost the ball several times, but with low numbers ball recovering was harder and failed. After Slibli's catch the situation looked very grim, but a -2d with wrestle worked, and a failed pickup gave us the chance we were looking for: a handful of 2+s and we got our TD. Probably not scoring was a good option too, leaving just a krox blitz+gfi as a chance to stop us and with almost no chance for the litties to get back the ball and score: but after almost 2 hours of match our wits were fading away..
In the 2 turns left we managed to waste a RR and failed to screen the skink marker, allowing a simple score to the opponent.
2-2 and overtime
Here we attacked, misplayed, got blitzed 1 dice, lost the ball, saw the ball picked up by a sidestepper skink. Here the game was gone, but an attempted pass ending in a fumble gave us the chance we looked for: again several 2+s, burning our last RR, ended in a turnover which put us on a desperate situation: but lizzies were without RR too and failed the 3+ pickup, leaving us a chance to perform one of our well know luck shows: Svolazzo leaped, picked up with 2 opponents annoying him, dodged out and sprinted toward the endzone!

I dropped a skink so i could get slibli + wizard. this seemed the safe option, particularly as i wanted as much Guard as i could get to help protect the ball.
I'd considered dropping a skink with block instead so i could get Morg to carry the ball(!) or just taking halfling chef to steal re-rolls
The whole game turned out to be crazy. the replay works. there's almost too much stuff that happened to report on, but here's what sticks in my mind
So much guard and tackle is a nightmare for my team to play against
Tara's first 20 blocks put 3 serious injuries onto saurus
I (as per traditions) failed several pickups on 2+, i think i failed 3-4 of them
I didn't make any massive positional fails, which i was worried about.
for most of the game i had the ball fully caged up, but still I did get my ball carrier blitzed repeatedly, it is just impossible to defend against this team.
I caught loose scatters on krox and on slibli, yet they still got blitzed and the ball spilled. most importantly the slibli -2db against using wrestle to take him down
Touchdowns:
First half Tara chose to kick, i struggled up the pitch getting my skink ball carriers blitzed constantly. eventually broke free and used wizard to try and ensure the score. (it was rather... rash as i deliberately caught my krox and a skink in the blast, to catch 5 frogs. Only result was a stunned blitzer though)
I still got blitzed but managed the TD
Tara then had 2 turns to equalise, but I'd screened his forward guys and blitzed his ball carrier so it was unlikely
Second half i kicked, Tara pushed forward, I got 2 tacklezones onto the ball carrier so he scored fast.
I then attacked, again got the ball blitzed repeatedly, Slibli caught a bounce, formed a cage of 4 saurus around him, still got -2db wrestled and the ball scooped :(
Krox had failed bonehead so couldn't mark the catcher, Tara managed a defensive touchdown putting him ahead 1-2
End of the 2nd, I've got 2 turns to score. send a skink down either flank. one gets blitzed, the other marked. I blitz his marker and manage the handover - score to equalise 2-2 so into overtime
Overtime, he won the cointoss, i blitzed his ball carrier, i tried to pickup and throw it downfield but fumbled the pass.
He scooped it and passed into my half but then dropped it. I failed the 3+ pickup, Tara then managed 2+ leap to get the ball in a tacklezone on a 4+, 2+ dodge, two 2+ GFI's to score and win
Overall I'm pleased to have taken a coach of Tarabaralla's level to overtime, I feel I played pretty well for me and pleased to have at least got to the end round of the qualifiers.
It was a good and crazy game, loads of pivotal luck moments resulting in the game flipping back and forth several times. the ball getting spilled frequently all over the place, outrageous blitzes, quite a lot of bashing, and tense overtime.
