Still, it was a long way towards the endzone. Bill managed to get into scoring position but The Company was out of rerolls. The Innocents did their best and marked the two slayers, as well as the ball carrier with a dt goblin. The necessary blitz by the Gnomes failed however (2d skull/both down) and the first half ended level.
Second half started 9 vs 11, but the Cheaters hoped to 'balance' the game a bit. A perfect defence twarted the attempt and the following turns an all out brawl in the middle of the pitch ensued. Beckham managed to get the ball after a lucky bounce and made his way across the left flank. The Gnomes, who were out of position after focussing on the Fanatic Dancer, were out of position and were starting to lose some Gnomes after all. Beckham ran it in on T5 and it seemed dire for DC.
The Gnome fans wouldn't have any of it though and they started rioting. The ref was so intimidated by that, that he put the clock back, thus leaving the Gnomes with ample time to try something. Bill, who was a massive asset this match, got the ball and started running again towards the endzone, covered by the Demolition crew. Thanks to excellent defending against the leaping blitzers, the cheaters had to get lucky and they did. A 2d went pow and Bill was on the ground again. This was probably the most crucial block of the game since even though Bill got the ball again it slowed him down enough and made defending the ball carrier a lot more difficult.
This happened more or less every turn from that point. Goblins got the ball lose, Bill picked it up again and moved a bit closer to the endzone. On T7 some Gnomes hurled forward to be in scoring range, but Bill was open to a chainsaw blitz (2+2+2+ without rr). Goblins got the ball loose again and then the Gnomes needed a small miracle to score.
Luckily for my boys it didn't happen and thus we're off to a decent start in S.P.L.A.T., even though we had to scrape the win here.
Though game tough, great coaching by PacoSillas. Rematch anytime!”
