“Fun game that contained a bit more strategy than you usually get in stunty. Must have been the matchup. Stunty dwarves (with bombs) versus lizard rats. Standard movement difference of 3 is quite big too. My Gnomes couldn't hope to screen all the space so we tried to play as compact as possible when we got the ball. The fact that we only had two guard players (we lost 4 of them in two consecutive games a short while ago) meant that our positioning had to be good.
First half was very tense and exciting, our bombs did good here but couldn't stop the 1-0 in turn 3. Meanwhile we had knocked a couple of heads together but nothing big. The kick was very far, but luckiley the crowd decided to riot in our favour. That extra turn really made a difference, this way we didn't have to force too much. First half ended pretty much perfectly for us. Not only did we manage to score on T8, but both their raptors dodged themselves out of the match in consecutive turns. Quite the relief, to be honest. We could start the second half with a numbers advantage too: 9 vs 7.
Second half consisted of two parts: us securing the ball and getting it in a cage for 3 turns and the remainder of the match was us running to the endzone. Meanwhile, the skinks were ready to take advantage of any mistake we'd make. But attrition began to take its toll and we quickly reduced the skink numbers to 4, with the stabber out as well. Then it was only a matter of time as our guard prevented a 1d blitz. Still, we needed our full movement every turn to get there, that's how long it takes for Gnomes to get there. I'm not regretting firing my cannon, because it sucked a lot more than it actually helped, but it could have been very useful here if things didn't go so well. T16 score and the skinks were just one player short of being able to try a OTT.
Skinks vs Gnomes is an interesting matchup I think. This match puts my performance against Skinks at 2-1-2. My Skink team has won their sole game against Gnomes. They're completely different teams and the resulting tactical play is very fun. Especially because it isn't solely a matter of avoiding the gnomes, as they don't have block or tackle. Though the match would have been completely different if I hadn't been able to take as many Skinks down as I could. Perhaps that's where the cannon comes in. Or the bombers, if they haven't been banned yet.
Anyway, good match and good luck with the team!”
