“The mood at the Soiled Dove saloon was jubilant that night and the Gunslingers were looking to celebrate. The bartender had set them up with several rounds already, but it seemed as though a peaceful night was not in the works. Some ruffians sporting nothing but chaps walked in as thought they owned the place.
Around these parts, that simply wouldn't do. The fight started as Bob Dalton shoved one of the ruffians over the bar and into some of MacGreevy's moonshine. The ruffian, who went by the name Old Thompson, lay on the floor moaning with several broken ribs and wouldn't rise again for the rest of the melee. Rip Van Winkle, one of Old Thompson's friends, scrambled to join in the fray but slipped on some beer that had spilled during the initial altercation.
With Pat Garrett leading the charge, the Gunslingers had little left to do but toss the lightly heeled interlopers into the street, reminding them to "Stay out the Woolworth's."”
