“During his short tenure as sheriff of Lincoln County, Pat Garrett had come to two undeniable conclusions. First, life in the western states was going to be tough. The dusty weather was unrelenting and the farmland was unforgiving. Second, the citizens of Lincoln County were tougher than anything Mother Nature could throw at them.

Every now and then a group of outsiders would try to stake their claim, but Pat knew how to handle a sidearm. Under a stormy sky late this afternoon, Sheriff Garrett was to prove his worth.

Slurry Irongrip, Arsi and Wirzi were well-known hooligans and in a whiskey-induced haze they hatched a plan to secure their place in Lincoln County history. "Oi! I 'ave an ideer!", Slurry rasped. "I say we'ze jump 'im in the alley in back of the brothel. He'z out on patrol t'day and I say we make it 'is last one. Haw, haw, haw!"

The partners in crime made their way to the back alley and were met immediately by Sheriff Garrett, who had overheard their plan from just outside. Wasting neither time nor bullets he dispatched all three in record time, with Slurry still falling to the ground as Arsi caught the third bullet square between his eyes.

Pat Garrett blew the smoke from the barrel of his Colt Peacemaker and turned a wistful eye to the west, watching the blood-red sun set in the distance.”
