A Well-Read Pestilence had been put forward as one of the ten games to pick in the AB&C Challenge, and for some added pressure was third on the list of teams picked to advance. Add to this my opponent playing late at night (for him) and while on vacation, and I was cautiously optimistic going in.
I won the coin flip and chose to kick, hoping to either remove some elves before having to defend, or be able to grind out for 2-1 after a quick initial score. The elves went for a pickup as their first action, and snakes robbed them of their momentum. The Pestilence lined up and hit, and Tour of Duty fell back and regrouped. They finally managed a breakout late in the half, getting a hero pass through, but a final failed Tentacles escape meant the teams went to halftime 0-0.
A High Kick gave Joseph Conrad the ball immediately. He moved it forward, and immediately came under attack. The Pestilence had kept some men nearby, and pulled more back, planting their Guards around the ball. When they finally went for a breakout, Tour of Duty kept harassing the ball-carrier, but were unable to take him down. A Pow on a Diving Tackler allowed a score. Tour of Duty got the ball with three turns and no rerolls. Their first advance was cut off, and with no better options made a couple coin flips for stat freak Myron Goldman II. to score. A Well-Read Pestilence hurt one more elf before the half ended.
Tour of Duty won the coin flip, running some players in while keeping the ball back. Their second turn saw a dodge away from Tentacles succeed in the Tents roll, but then find snakes for a KO. The Pestilence took advantage with some hits, including a very embarrassing success - a misclicked -2d against Myron Goldman II. came up Pow/Pow, and the takedown saw him niggled. The Pestilence made dodge/GFI/GFI/blitz the next turn to steal the ball, and another snake from the elves got them most of the way to the goal line. A miscalculation gave Tour of Duty a marker on the ball-carrier, but a Push was all that was needed to take the game.
Thanks to Meanandugl for getting the game in. And sorry again for the hit on Myron - it's an unfortunate way for such a great player to get hurt.
