The first half could not have gone any worse. We kicked, two linemen were KOed on the first sequence of blocked but the Chaos failed a ball pick-up, which put us in a good position to apply some quick pressure. Unfortunately, a snake-eyes self-KO on our best blitzer, Curufinwë, put an end to that rather quickly.
We gave ourselves chance at a 1 BD hit on a nice chain push but failed a necessary 3+ dodge resulting in our 5 Ag catcher seriously injuring himself.
We had a long shot at another ball carrier hit on T6 but needed quite a few 2+ non-RR rolls and were unable to succeed. After the chaos score T8, we entered the Kickoff with with 5 KOs and 1 SI, half of whom were self-inflicted on failed dodges. Thankfully, all but one player returned returned (go babes!).
A quick snap gave us a fairly reasonable chance at a OTT, but we got a Pow on our 3 BD hit, leaving our catcher stuck one square short of where he needed to be.
The chaos BLITZED to start the second half. We were able to sneak a catcher deep in their backfield, which most likely played right into their hands of hoping to force a quick TD on our part... I obliged and tied it up 1-1, giving the Chaos team 7 turns to score. With a full roster of Elves, we were hoping for a defensive stop and/or score.
Given how our defence seemed promising in the first half (prior to injuring ourselves dodging), we felt we had a decent chance to get a stop and maybe a score.
In the end, we managed a defensive 2 BD hit on the ball carrier with a RR but only managed pushes. It was a huge risk, as it basically allowed for Curufinwë to be easily surfed, but seemed worth the risk, as a loose ball could easily have meant a victory. Overall, the move failed and left us fairly vulnerable, allowing our best player to easily get crowd surfed, badly hurt, and apothed (was still hoping for OT).
We then managed a 5+ dodge (with RR, 55%) with our 4 Str lineman to get a 1BD hit on the ball carrier... We managed to succeed and sacked him! We managed to recover the ball, and after some dodging and going for it... We ended up putting a thrower and catcher (with ball) in scoring range. The catcher was blitzed and RIPed, but leaving the ball near the side-lines.
In an attempt to score, the chaos team muffed the pick-up and the crowd nicely tossed the ball back in deep, but near our other catcher. He was able to dodge, pick it up with RR, and make a 4+ long pass (avoiding an INT), to our thrower (roll reversal much?), who caught it in a TZ, dodged away and made the GFI for the TD! Giving us a 2-1 lead with just one turn to go!!
That was by far one of the most exciting turns I've had in bloodbowl in a while, especially given how the game had gone, the magnitude of the situation (major tournament), and the calibre of my opponent (75% win rate).
Anyways, a quick snap kick-off gave the chaos team some hope... Starting off with double Pow/Dodges allowed for us to choose to ignore the dodge skill forcing his long-shot of a OTT (6 Ma + Side step) in some immediate trouble which they were unable to recover from.
This was easily one of the most exciting and fun matches I've played. Especially given the pedigree of my opponent, who sports a 75% win rate. Thanks for the game!”
