Welcome Blood Bowl aficionados and Creekmoor.

The Rusland Royals recorded their first top flight win against admittedly lacklustre opposition in the form of FC Brisingamen. Questions are already being asked about league commissioners not being able to find better quality teams to make up the numbers.

Cadellin started the poor play when he inexplicably failed to push Elizabeth I into the crowd as she strayed dangerously into the end zone. It was an error that would come back to haunt him. A few plays later she dodged nimbly passed him and found space in the corner. Moments later she was picked out by a sublime pass from Henry VIII - one nil.

It appears Hepworthnot has been reading the coaching manual as he came out with the "smiley face" defence which was novel. All very well but ruined by a pointless tackle by Harold resulting in a turnover when they should have attacked the ball - one all.

Griminir the ogre was ineffectual, nothing more to say.

Creekmoor continues the basic mistake of putting his players in tackle zones meaning the Royals were constantly able to hit with two dice blocks and outblocked FCB by 46 to 36. He doesn't seem to understand that you're only allowed one blitz a turn so you can massively reduce the number of blocks your opponent does simply by taking a step back.

You can't blame the coach for execution on the pitch. Fenodyree was next to embarrass the team with a pass - in to the crowd! Cue howls of derision and chants of "should have gone to specsavers".

The Royal's work on the tackle bags during the two week lay off paid dividends with the Black Prince badly hurting Durathor and Alfred smashing Gowther's hand - he's out for the next game.

Creekmoor managed, as usual, to hit a coaching low by positioning Colin "totally unscathed" The Catcher right next to two Royals. Now as even the wettest behind the ear BB fan knows catchers are fast and dodgy. They are not strong and blocky. The Royals played the classic double whammy and Colin will not even be able to watch the next match as he is out with a gouged eye.

The Royals were always going to win the game and when Alfred picked up the ball in turn 6 of the second half he carefully shepherded it into the corner, wound down the clock to ensure no time for a come back and crossed the whitewash to the delight, if not surprise, of the adoring fans.

FC Brisingamen have had the worst possible start to the league and will have to rely on journeymen if they are to field 11 players for their next match.

Hepworthnot Disappoints Again

I am not sure which game my not-so-learned colleague was at last week, but it doesn’t seem to be the one I saw.

From where I was standing (all the seats had been ripped out during the previous match so I couldn’t sit) it was yet another litany of disappointment from the vastly overrated Coach Hepworthnot. In the scrappy opening exchanges, he didn’t seem to have a clue what his tactics were. He was lacklustre, lacking in vision and ideas, and, quite frankly, dull, as the proverbial.

The only plus I could acknowledge would be that the Royals made their blocks count. Many of their hits were effective and this caused personnel problems for rookie side, Brisingamen. However, that immediately brings me to the next negative - considering they had the numbers advantage for most of the match, the Royals really did not use it. I would actually go as far as to say that Brisingamen did an extraordinary job of making it look like it was 11 against 11 out there.

Sadly, and no B.B. fan wants to see this, despite manpower advantage, the Royals were extremely poor, and very negative. For a star, Brisingamen simply should not have scored when they did. The Royals practically handed them the ball. And amazingly, against all the odds, Brisingamen were closer than it looked to scoring a second before the half ended.

When the Royals took the lead, they really turned negative, and seemed to have no intention of trying to get a third. Creekmoor (and most of the other coaches who have partaken of the Ugly Game) would never do such a dull, pathetic thing. It’s all about TDs in this game (and hurting opponents) and a team should have a burning desire to score whether they are one up or ten up!

And as for that formation. My lord, which obscure B.B. text book did that come out of? And what was it? What did it do? Waste of time, if you ask me. A ridiculous joke - smiley face, for pity’s sake.

Summary:

Hepworthnot - dull, predictable, uninspiring, overrated

Creekmoor - brave, exciting, ingenious, underrated
