Critics suggested this wasn't the classic Scoundrels team of old. Legneck Won't Stop Bouncing has probably stopped bouncing forever, and will be operating as the team's apothecary next season, if they can replace the leg bone in his neck.
Avo Smash Toast (RIP) was replaced by not one, but two chainsaws, and the coach had somehow found his way to also forgive Fungus for knocking out Irene earlier in the season, and brought him back on as well. With talk of extra training for the team for the past few weeks, and rumours that they'd stolen the Digeridead's playbook, expectations were high for the match.
Not that high, of course. Hardly any fans turned up for the Scoundrels, expecting a similar disaster fest to last season. Despite protests from the Digeridead team that they hadn't played before, the Scoundrels continue to insist that because of the bandages, they can't tell different Khemri apart, and they're all dead anyway.
However, the game went quite against expectations. Playing a revolutionary new formation, with the special weapons team off the pitch apart from his ever-loving lady, Irene Shandyhands, and with the trolls off the line, protected by a mob of badly paid journeymen, the Tomb Kings failed to make much headway under the lethal assault of Irene's bombs, and after a lot of shoving and few casualties, the goblins managed to sack the ball carrier, and leave it to Pinkeye to sprint with the ball to the end zone.
Sadly in the second half, we couldn't hold on for a win - the Digeridead kicked deep, and we made the mistake when we managed to pick up the ball of moving just inside blitzing range. With both teams looking like they'd turned up short-handed to a BB7's match, it took a little while longer (but not much) for the dusty desert forces to roll over the little forest folk and equalise.
But still, the Scoundrels' best result ever, from what has been an unremittingly tough season. Have they finally learned how to play?”
