Week 3
Our showdown with the reigning National Champions (albeit, minus the 7 graduates who were part of the championship squad) started off a little rocky. Sure, we knocked out one of their blitzers early, but we ate a lot of blocks in return, and by the end of the 3rd turn Miami had four players KOed in the dugout. The plan of "Let them keep punching us in the face; they'll tire themselves out" must have worked, as we managed to get on 1d blitz on the ball, killing Odom (saved by the Apoth), and setting the ball loose for us to recover. The recovery didn't last long, as the ball was set loose along the sidelines, and our numbers dwindled to five players on the pitch. A scrum followed in which the ball bounced, and Mayden stepped in under heavy cover and managed to pick up the ball. Of course then he fumbled the pass, only for Goliath to catch it (way to go, you big lug!) After clearing him a path, Goliath immediately went Bone Head, giving Mz State the ball back. As the orcs marched down towards the endzone, looking to score, Mayden was looking for some redemption for that fumbled pass. Unfortunately the block he threw took himself down as well, leaving the lone blitzer holding the ball. We blitzed down the ball carrier, recovered, and got into the endzone just in time to close the first half 1-nil.
While on Defense, Mz State rushed in and knocked us around, forcing a "tactical withdrawal." But the orcs over committed, giving Miami a chance to lob the ball into the orc half of the pitch, where one of our blitzers had manage to come to a rest. A game of cat and mouse began as the orcs knocked the ball loose, but could not recover. Miami got the ball back, only for Mz to mark the ball carrier. But a blitz prevailed and we stepped into the endzone to take the match up 2-nil.
Mz set up to try and get a point on the board, but a bad hand off left the ball on the ground, and after a push to scatter, we recovered and tried to punt it out of reach. Mayden had his final chance to toss the ball to an unmolested blitzer awaiting in the endzone, but the long bomb went wild, and fell short of the intended target. Final whistle blew, and the match was over.
Good game.”
