In the third round of the spring season, the Meddlers faced the Crystal Mere Keepers, newcomers to Athel Loren and CIBBL. After two draws Timaris Stormwing, the Meddlers' headcoach, was longing for a much needed win. Although facing a wizard and the monstrosity called Schworg'n'Borg, Timaris was confident his wood elves wood perform well.
The Meddlers decided to kick in order to put pressure on the ball right from the start. For five full turns the Meddlers had been harassing the Keepers' cage, but without much result. For reasons beyond Timaris' comprehension, the Keepers suddenly decided to call on their wizard to intervene with a fireball to clear the path. The spell was launched much too nervously though, both targeted elves dodging the mayhem. Then Beldroth smashed open a corner of the cage, the sign for Hauclir to move in and blitz the ballcarrier. The ball scattered, but Nimrodel leapt in and evacuated the ball, handing it off to Ethandril. The rest of the drive the wood elves held off their kin from the Crystal Mere before running in the touchdown: 1-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half the Meddlers nearly lost the ball, but the situation was quickly rectified and by turn 4 it was 2-0. Then the Keepers snaked the pick-up of the new drive, offering an opportunity to the Meddlers to steal the ball. Mereia, the Meddlers' assistant coach who had been a silent, somewhat bored observer until then, lifted her shades, a crooked smile on her lips. "Looks like Isha's somewhat confused today and her blessings fell on the Meddlers' shoulders", she purred. "Better late than never", Timaris continued. Finally his prayers for a smooth game had been answered. The wood elves dodged through the holes and ran for the ball. Before the Keepers even realized what had just happened, another touchdown had been marked and the score was 3-0.
The Meddlers had smelled blood and their thirst wasn't over just yet. Aggressively pressuring the ball, the Keepers nevertheless managed to get it to safety and even launched a counteroffensive. But disaster struck Isha's followers when Broncassiel slipped during a going for it, leaving the ball free in the open. A gift the Meddlers gladly accepted. Some blocks, a pass and a hand-off later the final score was on the board: 4-0.
One of the best performances of the Meddlers!
When adrenaline had returned to its normal levels, Timaris wandered around the abandoned pitch. He was obviously looking for something. "What's up boss?", Mereia asked him from the sidelines. "Dropped your handkerchief or something?", she wanted to know. "Nothing of the kind", Timaris countered. "I'm gathering the remains of the helmet that follower of Isha lost when Nimrodel smashed her head in", he continued. "Why'd you do that?", the former catcher wondered. "One never knows when such a relic comes in handy", the coach replied mysteriously. Without offering any other explanation, he left the field, leaving Mereia pondering his acts...
