Things had gone smooth so far for the Meddlers. The Wolf Lands Slavers would be the last obstacle to carry the Athel Loren Green Thumb trophy back home. Timaris Stormwing, the Meddlers' owner and head coach, seemed confident enough. The preparations for the game had been without incident. His team was ready. Mereia, the assistant-coach, was her nonchalant self showing up at the game with a martini in her hand, black shades hiding her eyes. "Look", she told Timaris matter-of-factly, "they hired Hthark". A glint of tension appeared around Timaris' mouth when he noticed the enormous bull centaur entering the pitch, but he suppressed it quickly and was somehow relieved he didn't remark a hired wizard on the opposition's bench.
The Meddlers started the first half receiving. The opposing wall of black orcs proved too solid to bring down, so the elves eventually decided to leave them be and simply move around instead. Hauclir carried the ball and moved down the line, but was forced to turn back before reaching the endzone. The elves targeted the sneakier hobgoblins instead of the sturdy black orcs and by turn 5 the Meddlers had already removed 3 of them from the pitch. Meanwhile not a single elf had been knocked off. That made the stalling game much easier, bringing a reassuring smile to Timaris's thin lips. While Mereia had started dozing off in the gentle afternoon's sun, Timaris smiled with satisfaction when Hauclir finally ran in the touchdown: 1-0 at halftime.
The Slavers received in the second half and managed to remove Belborth Bluebark from the field in turn 1. The crushing sound of the treeman going down waked Mereia, who returned her attention to the ongoing game. Without Bluebark's presence, there was no hope of stopping the Slavers' advance. Timaris was nervously considering his options. Should he send in Morlanna or Ethandril? That was probably the right thing to do. But the timing was important too. It wasn't until turn 6 that an opportunity presented itself. Ethandril leaped in and kicked the ball free, that eventually landed in Morlanna's hands. She lost it one turn later, but then Hauclir evacuated the ball to safety. The road to 2-0 seemed open, but a snaked pass decided otherwise.
Still, another win for the Meddlers!
When the game had long ended, Timaris was strolling the field before kneeling down at the spot where Lazaard Zhrapen, one of the opposing hobgoblins, had died. He noticed an eagle's feather that had come off of the greenskin's leather hat when he died. With a mysterious smile on his thin lips Timaris pocketed the item. Another one for the collection...”
