Goblins need luck and creativity, and smallman brought both in abundance.
He chucked Ripper and the trolls on the LOS and everything else at the back, with the key AG4 goblins in the dugout. Clearly the plan was a TTM turn 8 with the incredibly dangerous AG4 Doom Diver. So I swamped the trolls and he replied with a 'platoon play', calling in an air strike 'on my location', with bomber and Wiz. He downed a lot of dwarves but thankfully no damage was done. then.
As the ball advanced the chainsaw went to work and laughed at Dwarf armour, I lost one first rank hitting beard to Ripper, one to the saw and one to a foul, all missing SI's. I risked the apoth on the third one and was very pleased to see it work for once. The goblin horde was used effectively to keep the saw safe and while the td never looked in doubt, I was down to 11 and shorn of two top hitters. Exactly one goblin had left the pitch, the bomber Ko'd. Here the dice turned bleak for smally, with one bribe failing and the bomber being banned and the Ripper/ag4 DD failing.
Second half and the B&C went down to what i was prepared to be a -2die but came up both pows, I had hit it with dauntless, but hadnt expected it to work, and cant recall if it did or didt, but with 2 pows, it didnt matter who chose the outcome. then his drive ground badly to a halt giving me an easy 2 die on the ball, but i missed the chance amid some terrible push choices. Smallman replied with a snake handing the ball to an AG4, but i snaked the pick up,a 1 in 9 to his 1 in 36, and his ag4 pogo retrieved, ran away, handed off (via the ground and a nice bounce and catch) and ran it in. Classic Goblins, creatively and well done.
So a short drive back to win, with goblins turned into missiles the ball went away into goblin hands and a lucky bounce as I took it down meant a 4+ without reroll to win. Hedging my bets in case of overtime I had hits on the Doom Diver and managed to gimp it, and then the 4+ pick up worked and it was over.
Goblins need luck, bravery and creative play, and smallman brought all three to the table. Just not quite enough of the luck.
A game with no positive outcome (you win-so? you lose-wow!), and i felt a huge potential for an upset, ended, and we count our dead and look with bleak hope onwards.
Congratulations smallman, a game well coached and had that TTM turn 8 worked.... well, different game.”
