Both teams have completed their pregame warmup, rituals, and rites. As expected, the home team won the toss and Legion has chosen to receive the opening kick off. It is a good kick that unexpectedly landed in the hands of Knuckles. While he is listed as a Catcher, I am surprised that he knows what to do with the ball. Ahh…that is a smart lad. He immediately handed it to Bullet so each of them can do their jobs. The opening play is rather boring as each team settles into good field positioning waiting for the other squad to commit to one side of the field.
Anthony Munoz draws first blood for legion by injuring the “Rock” David Rochelle. It looks like that is going to leave a niggle. Not to be left out of the fun, Max Murtair hurt the Wrecker blitzer Damien Harris. Harris was playing without a helmet making him an obvious choice for Murtair. That opens some room on the southern side of the pitch. Bullet gives the ball back to Knuckles who will take the ball in for the first score of the game.
Legion returns the ball to the Wreckers who immediately get it into the hands of Weatherby. Weatherby makes a play down the center of the field and is well protected by his teammates. The Legion swarms in. Weatherby looks to be cramped. The Wreckers are badly surrounded. They cannot bring down a single Legionnaire but they manage to move a few of them. That made enough room for Weatherby to try to break free. Look out! Seamus McFamous had a hand on him and almost tripped him as he tried to escape but Weatherby does get out of his clutches and sprints to the endzone to tie the game at one point each.
Midway through the first half and the ball is back in Legion’s hands. Suddenly the heat is stifling. Two Gun knocks the rookie blitzer Porter out of the match for a break. The action is getting heated and tempers are flaring. Fouls from Knuckles have rubbed the Wreckers badly. There is a serious commotion on the field. The Wrecker Ogre is shouting for the apothecary who scurries in only to declare that the super star thrower Andres Johannsen is Dead, Dead, Dead. Lets take a look at the replay and try to figure out what happened.
Ahh yes. Well the superstar made a rookie mistake. He underestimated the man in front of him. “The Wart”, Chris Worley is the smaller man but he can be just as dangerous. This is especially the case because he received some assistance from both Max and Knuckles. Worley will get credit for the kill as he is the one who ended up turning Johannsen on his head. It looks like it was a clean neck break. Still some of the credit should go to Knuckles and Max.
The ref has signaled for play to resume but the Wreckers are not ready. Coach Dieuraskel is clearly discombobulated. He is cursing and perhaps even mourning the death of his super star. Meanwhile, Kizer has passed the ball to Bullet. Bradley Chubb skulls out for the Wreckers. And Bullet will score his second touchdown of the half.
As agreed prior to the match, the halftime festivities will be delayed until the end of the game in order to expedite the match. As such, Legion has already set up on defense and will kick the ball to the Wreckers to start the second half. However, the heat is having a serious effect. Murtair and Turner are both trying to hydrate on the bench as are Weatherby and Williams for Wreckers.
Listen to that cheer. The announcer just declared that a generous donation has been made to the referee guild which means only the most egregious fouls will be called today.
It is a short kick. Chub and Blythe move to protect the ball. Kyler Murry comes over to pick it up. How improbable! He took his eye off the ball at the prospect of being blitzed and dropped it at his own feet. Well, you can be sure he is going to get blitzed now.
Nope. Artair picks up the ball where Murray had failed and throws it back to Knuckles. Unfortunately, the screen is far from perfect. Ntamack blitzes Knuckles, brings him down, and picks up the ball. What a play! Ballage cannot bring him down. Ntamack will dodge away and score to tie the ball game again.
Now McFamous and Artair are on the bench with heatstroke as are Hurd and Gilbert for the Wreckers. The heat continues to wreak havoc. Kizer tosses the ball to Bullet. A foul from Knuckles hurts Porter. Now they are popping. Linemen Blythe and Green are knocked out of the game. Another foul by Knuckles but the ref is reasonable and lets it slide.
What an effort from Weatherby leaping over players to blitz the Bullet. It looked good until Bullet knocked him down. Another foul with help by Bullet but Weatherby just shakes it off. Weatherby will not give up. He leaps out of the grasp of 3 players and makes a successful solo blitz on Bullet. Fortunately, O’Daniel is a good tackler. He brings down Weatherby and Knuckles will pick it up and score.
They line up for the one turn score but without a true thrower on the field the task falls to Jalen Hurd. The appropriate blocks are made and Weatherby is open. Hurd picks it up but trips over his own feet trying to get the ball to Weatherby. The game will come to an emotional end as both squads are still squabbling on the field. But in the end final score will remain Legion 3 and the Wreckers 2.
Thanks for watching everyone. Join us next week here in Mordheim when Legion will host the hated Manticores in their second game of the season. Until then, I am Merlin Oldsoul bidding you adieu.
