They got the ball to their quick catcher Kenny Ball who retreated safely near his own endzone. Moments later, despite being a catch Ball tried to pass to “Harlequin” Hardorson. It was a good idea. If Hardorson had received the ball, he was fast enough that it was highly unlikely any Legionnaires. Unfortunately, Ball dropped the ball at his own feet. Ball would pay for that as Dorian O’Daniel easily scooped it up and then Knuckles came in to foul Ball. The resulting Niggling injury to Ball sent a collective shudder through the Buccaneers team and staff. Later a hit from Kalen Ballage badly hurt the muscular Carl Comms. O’Daniel would stall out the half and score with no time left on the clock.
A normal game of blood bowl you might say. Kondor had thought so too until the second half. The Buccaneer’s second half deployment is commonly known as the white flag formation. Having given up a defensive touchdown in the first half and having suffered injuries to both Bell and Comms the Buccaneers felt like they had no answer to combat the Legionnaires. The Buccaneers would not move from their deployment along their own endzone for the remainder of the match. The Legionnaire thrower and catchers played catch all half while the home crowd howled insults. The game would win with a one to zero score in favor of Mordheim.
Kondor had to reflect. In the heat of the moment, he had understood the coaching decision. However, as he looked at it now it seemed like a poor choice. With an entire half to play, a bit of defense and a bad bounce of the ball could have turned the game. Kondor reached a personal conclusion. No matter how unlikely a win maybe he would never throw in the towel down 1-0 at halftime when he could field eleven for the second half.
