For a season that started 0-0-2, the Mary's Land Terrible Terrapins certainly have a lot to be proud of by finishing their season 4-3-3. However, one would be forgiven in thinking the season was an absolute disaster given the way the team and coach felt at the end of their final game against the Cairo St Crypts. While this team falls just short of the 5 wins needed for a bowl birth, many are already pointing to next season as a make or break year for the team to make some impact in the NCBB.
Coach Lancelott addressed the mob of reporters after the game, "we played our hearts out, anyone could see that. I'm so **** proud of every single member of this team, they fought to the very end. The field conditions were abysmal, the snow really countering the speed advantage we had and yet our boys and girls kept right on fighting." Coach Lancelott wipes a single tear away as he continued, "we're going to get better, I can tell you that. This team is not done, not by a long shot."
The entirety of the game was played in a snowstorm, the weather obviously getting to the cold blooded Terrapins. Receiving the ball, the Crypts moved methodically down the field, leaning on the superior strength of their mummy front line. The Terrapin's apothecary was busy, patching up Saurus to keep them on the pitch, notably when Nathifa knocked out Raymond Hagerston (major - economics). Nathifa was quoted after the game, "haaaaate lizards. Nathifa smaaaaashhhhh." And smash he did indeed, ending the game with two casualties.
While the injuries did pile up, the Terrapins were able to conduct their trademark staunch defense, opening up a hole for a blitzing Harmony One-Love (major - underwater biodegradable container construction) to hit and badly hurt the ball carrier Mukhwsna. Unfortunately for the Terrapins, the anointed thrower was quickly regenerated on the bench. The hit did stymie the drive, and even though the Crypts had no trouble picking up the ball, they were forced to make a last second dash to the endzone which was eventually stopped by a blitzing David Damascus (major - biomechanics).
The second half started with the Terrapins driving aggressively down the field, trying to put pressure on the slower Crypts. It was not to be as the ball carrier Jaxson Airy (major - economics), the typically sure footed skink, slipped dodging away from some of the opposing skeletons and coughed up the ball. The resulting scrum saw the ball back in the hands of Jaxson briefly before he was again punched to the ground. As time was running down, the Terrapins had one final chance to scoop up the ball and score. Bently Trappe (major - spear construction) bravely dodged between three mummies to scoop up the ball. However, the snow had been piling up in the endzone all game and as the skink made a last rush to try and get in the endzone he fell and lost the ball to the stands.
The Terrapins indeed gave their all this season and this reporter agrees with the coaches' assessment of their growth and grit. We can only hope their games are as entertaining next season!”
