First of all I think my errors in this matches started in the inducements.. because I know Tschirgant was a much better coach, my idea was to try and go for a high roll approach, hence buying Zug and Helmut (which normally I don't think it's worth the money), maybe I should have gone with Karla and the Ram to get some mobility. What I had hoped for was that with my best player missing for this match, 1 Mb Dwarf was probably not enough, so I'd get one more Mb and the Chainsaw well.. it works greatly against AV8.. but probably not so much when the opponent has 16 players.
First turn was also a mess I ended up putting myself in a situation where after not knocking down 2 of the guys in the line, I blitz one with the chainsaw and hit the other.. which was not knocked down either and ended up being in contact with the chainsaw, which allowed Tschirgant to put 2 guards in contact, hit and remove the chainsaw guy, and from the it was just downhill.. attacking 10 v 11 against a more mobile team, a better coach and letting him trade pieces favorably for him, made it a real struggle. I ended up losing the ball to a risky advancement that I probably still didn't need to do at that point and the rest of the match, I kept taking risks to try and recover from that, which never happened.
I also really need to look at the replay and understand how to improve bash matchups, which I feel I still have a lot to develop on. From a very superficial analysis, the initial mistake was costly and then keeping the team too spread positionally with such a slow team, was also a bad choice. The lack of guard on my side (lost some through the tournament.. only had 2 for this match) also meant I really needed to keep his guard pieces busy somehow, trying to trade ulfs for skillless lineman or something.
Tschirgant was a great sport all along, one of the nicest coaches I played recently. I really hope to meet him in a TT tournament next year. He is also an extremely good player, no wonder he is #1 on fumbbl.
I'm very positively surprised with my Steel Gauntlet experience as a whole, let's see if I can return next season with a team I'm more comfortable with!”
