A brutal game for the poor Nobility. Once again, for the 3rd game this season, we suffer an opening Blitz! event, which did change how the game unfolded.
The Nobility put on a lot of pressure, and with the deep kick off we had to play smart to reconnect. Even then, the frustration of Stand Firm and Fend made life difficult.
However, many of our players were tagged, allowing us to make a number of MB blocks. The casulty count did up, including our Mummy Webke who bullied the Ogre, causing a Badly Hurt in the 1st half with was saved by apo, then a Death in the 2nd half. Ogre Slayer!
Learnings
1. PROTECTION
This was for the first 6 turns, absorbing the pressure, advancing very little, and giving maximum focus on protecting the ball.
The use on Guard skill was also critical, placed on cage corner. The Stand Firm Wrestle players were able to camp next to our ball carrier, but due to guard skill they could only get -2db on our Blodge carrier. With wrestle, it is then only 20% chance success (with re roll) compared to 55% if we had not had guard in place.
2. PRESSURE
The Nobility pressure was exceptional, however we practiced patience to help steer our way through.
3. MINOR ADJUSTMENTS
There were some instances where I chose to 1db with a zombie, or dodge with a zombie. These failed, but it perhaps would be better to leave zombie tagged to be blocked. This would eat the activation of the opposition.
Also, in 2nd half, we clear a path for a downed ghoul to dodge, but we forget to dodge out. This could gave been a critical mistake, as it was at the time the Nobility surged ahead for the score. Small, silly mistake, could have had enormous consequences.
There were some moments where we were caught out of position, with all of our faster players- Ghouls and Wights- stacked to one side of pitch. We must pay attention for better coverage.
Summary
In the end, the Canetoads were quite lucky with armour breaks and removals, and also getting the timing right on critical things like picking up the ball, and attempting to sack the ball.
Webke now has 6x CAS for the season. An outside chance of most CAS in the regionals, but still unlikely. The season is now without much interest, only dead rubbers left, and pride to play for. Such is life in the SWL where the cream rises to the top, and the Canetoads are left behind. ”
